Ok... so after a her first year, I've just finished replacing practically everything in the engine. Thanks to all for the help so far. Now here comes her test, next week I have major traveling plans and only have my 1966 289 4spd as a ride. I'm pretty confident she'll do alright, but it never hurts to prepare. I just put in a fresh set of plugs, new points (bought a back-up just in case) and will change the oil as well. Overall I'm expecting the combined trips will be over 1000 miles in a week. Battery is new, starter is new, alternator is new, radiator and water pump are BRAND new, ignition coil is new, tires are new, wiper blades are new, fuel pump is new, etc. Carb is new (put on in december) but should I spray with carb cleaner?

Any suggestions to double check? Should I put any additives in it? A carb cleaner in the gas? Or Marvel Mystery oil or a lead additive?

If a break down of the trip will help:
Day 1: Leaving Northern Virginia to Harrisonburg (brief stop) then to Roanoake (brief stop), then to Smith Mountain lake (Done for day): Distance 300 miles.
Day 4: Leave Smith Mountain lake to 1763 Inn (job) in Upperville. Distance: 300 miles.
Day 5: Leave Uppervile back to Northern Va for brief stop, then go to Ocean City, NJ. Distance: 350-400 miles.
Day: 12: Leave NJ, back to Northern Va, end of trip.

Overall about 1000 so miles in a couple of days so any suggestions / past experiences welcome. Thanks.

Ryan

Sounds like you are in good shape, just be sure to take a couple hundred extra for unseen surprises. That, and DON'T pick up hitch-hikers. Have a good trip, and pick up a disposable digi-camera to post pics.

A cell phone is a must-have, along with AAA in case you need to tow the car to a better/safer place to work on it.

Have you checked tire pressure lately? What about alignment? I got the opportunity to replace my tires after a long trip due to poor alignment. The car drove fine but the inside part of the front tires wore out during the trip.

Extra points, condenser, maybe coil things that can go out without warning. Top off your brake fluid, make sure all your lights and in working condition and carry some extra fuses an extra gallon of gas and fire extinguisher. Thats all i got for now....David F.

In 135,000 miles in my 65 I only had two breakdowns. One was a plastic Mallory coil that cracked and shorted out to the screen I wrapped around it to keep noise out of my ham radio. The othet was a broken Hurst linkage retainer spring clip that held the shifter rods to the transmission levers.

I drive a Ranger every day and don't trust it like I did the 65.

If its generally running fine, I wouldn't mess with it anymore, and I wouldn't spray carb cleaner. You don't want to disturb something and create a problem for yourself. Forget about any additives, again you might stir up something that is better left alone. You know Murphy's law, and if there is an addendum to it I'm sure it would say something about the first part to fail will be the last part you touched.

I hope you haven't been replacing good working parts thinking that they would eventually need it anyway, so might as well do it now. Because sometimes those old good working parts are better quality and will work better than new replacement parts.

My wife would occasionally get concerned over even small trips of 300 - 400 miles, until I reminded her she already drove the car that many miles in the last few weeks and didn't have any unusual problems. I think the steady, constant running of a long trip is much easier on many parts of the car rather than the frequent start-stop-turn-brake-accelerate of local trips.

Road trips are great! Have a good time, and like others said, a cell phone and a AAA card will help greatly in most situations! (if you upgrade to the Gold AAA membership you get 100 miles free towing, which for me means that my car could break down an hour and a half away in Bloomington, IL and I could get it towed back to my house near Chicago, where I could fix it myself!)

Have a fun and safe trip. This is what I carry in the car:

Extra ignition wires.
Simple tool kit with bailing wire.
Tire in a can for quick fixes of flats to get to a repair shop.
Rags, towels and leather gloves.
A sissors jack that fits under the car.
Space saver spare tire.
Fire extinguisher between the seats.
Tube of silicone.
Electrical tape.
Flares.

An extra set of fan belts don't take up much room, and don't forget the tools to change the belts.

I've heard that a lot of tire shops HATE "tire in a can" or "fix-a-flat". That stuff glues the tire to the rim and makes a mess of some wheels. Use it sparingly!

My tire guy agrees! He said it WILL stop the leak; - but once inside your tire, it will goober up inside and throw your tire balance off...... but it will stop up the leak.

I use the tire plug kit in my car. Get one from walmart or any part store. If you tire blows out the can seal stuff will not help anyway. That is what a spare is for. I like the idea of a mini spare. Now if you get a nail on something like that the plug is a simple fix.

Richard.

I've used it a couple of times. I just told the tire changer that it was in there before he let out the pressure. Once the tire was off the rim, he just scrubbed the powder out with water and patched the tire.

Now that D. Trucker had mentioned fan belt, I remember putting one in the trunk somewhere.

As a Safety Engineer...watch out carrying an extra gallon of gas unless it's in a approved SAFETY CAN, as one gallon of gas has the explosive power of 5 sticks of dynamite! Everything else mentioned is fine. ...Best, gr

I carry a couple of empty juice bottles in my work van, don't forget to dilute it with water, four to one so you won't kill vegetation!

New, or repacked front wheel bearings. I think you've covered just about everything.
