oops, hope I just didn't post a blank posting! Hit Return by accident. I've -finally- got my 390 in my S-code, complete with hooker long tube headers! YEAH! Man, what a tight fit... Anyway, though it sounds good with open headers , I'm going to install a dual exhaust with H-pipe, but what muffler would make this beast sound deep and throaty, without being obnoxious to me and everyone else? I want it loud (not too loud), but GOOD! I've heard Flowmaster can be too loud and blatty. Running 2.5" pipe from 3" collectors. Thanks!

I beleive most ppl here like the dynomax super turbos. I have a 302 with full hooker headers h pipe and flowmasters its fine but i beleive it will depend on how many chambers are in the muffler as to the sound output. Hope that helped some. Also I beleive some of the websites for mufflers like dynomax have a wave file of the sound.

Your best bet would to go out and listen to some cars. Some people love the flowmasters, other like the ultra flows, I like the super turbo's. Ravin`s, mean and tough at WOT and a very throaty low growl at cruising. I have them on my 65 (289 with Tri-Y`s) and I think they sound great.------------------ JOHN 65 FASTBACK 2+2 87 TAURUS WAGON 03 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4 SHORT BOX Member: PACIFIC COAST MUSTANG ASSOCIATION Member:Vancouver Island Mustang Association M&M #1710 65 FASTBACK 2003 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4

Are the 3 chamber's too loud? Was thinking of getting them but a too loud muffler becomes too obnoxious after not too long a time. LOL! My 65 GT had thrush turbos and they were like a f*rt in church! Blapppp!

Thanks for all the great input. Unfortunately, all of the sound fill links on Mustang Monthly's site are broken, and www.goravin.com keeps timing out before connecting. I can't find any info on where to buy Ravins or what their price is. Midas.com is no help either. Where did you all get your Ravins? I think I'll either go with Ravins or the Dynomax super turbos. But I'd to hear them first...on a big block.

Pete, they aren't that loud at idle. But they have a bad drone from idle-2000rpm that drives me crazy sometimes. I like to hear the exhaust. I just don't want that drone sound any more.------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe 351w C4 Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

So 65VA2+2, yours are too loud? What are you running? (single, dual exaust? H/X pipe? stock manifolds/headers? size?) I'm just trying to figure out what variables affect the loudness. I think I saw a 289 in your profile, but I've heard some guys with 289s/302s say their Ravins sound pretty mellow. I guess it pretty much is all subjective!

I have run 3 chamber flows for many years. I still think they sound fantastic but I could no longer take the noise cruising down the freeway or the resonance. Last month I bought a pair of Borla XS mufflers. These are probably the quietest performance mufflers that don't hurt power. Actually the tests I read indicated that they put out more power than most, including Flowmasters. The car now idles quietly with just a slight rumble. It is now quiet enough on the freeway that I can talk on my cell phone. It still roars when I punch. It is a bit louder than I expected but I am happy with the sound.

I have astroked 289, performance cam with hooker comp headers, with an "H" connection connecting the dual exhausts...may be getting old, but I prefer something more subtle.

Had a pair of Dynomax Super Turbos (the large body 17793) and a pair of Dynomax Race Bullets ahead of them as resonators. Had an H-pipe and ended ahead of the rear axles. This was with 3 inch pipes. Quiet at cruise but had some resonance at idle even with the resonators. It would vibrate the house some if the car were idling in the garage. Decided to try an X-pipe and Hooker Max Flows. The Max Flows are supposed to be quiet at idle but kind of loud at WOT. It is a straight through design like the Dynomax Ultra Flo. Didn't think it would be very quiet but I was amazed. It is really quiet at idle and cruise but louder than my previous setup under acceleration. This was even before I put tailpipes on and seems to be even quieter with the tailpipes. I still can't believe 3 inch straight through mufflers can be so quiet with no resonance. Maybe it's the X-pipe? Probably running the same Hooker headers you are 6114.

Afret, that's bad!! I love the batt kill switch thru the GT cut-out in the valence! Yeah, I'm running the same headers. I'll bet the X-pipe mellowed it out a bit, as I've heard it can do that compared to an H, but never heard a back-to-back comparo with all things being equal. Well, that gives me another option even. Oh, decisions decisions! But they're the fun kind. I see you're in Lancaster, a lot of my family lives up there and in Apple Valley. Small world...

Last night at a cruise in spot, I heard lots of different mufflers. I can tell the ultra flows are REAL loud once rev'd. The dyno max super turbo's are real quite, so are some of the edlebrocks I heard. I think the motor has to do with it too. I know my exhaust system sounded different with my old motor then it does now. It's more quite now but but has a deep rumble. And yes that drone that'll drive you nuts. I might go with the ultra flows now?

Hedmen long tube hedders, 2.25 pipe, H pipe, older 3 chamber flowmasters turn down before the rear axle. I'm going to be installing a 2.5"-3" system with an Xpipe and either Ultra flows, or Super turbo's. If I don't use the new 2.5" super turbo's I have I'll let you know. Just so you know, at the cruise in my car was one of most quite one's there. ------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs65 coupe 351w C4 Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. Joel (Fastback Nation), it was a pleasure to send you the video with the sound of my Ravins. They sound great up to 45 mph and then, I find them a little noisy. I'll try an H-Pipe, some say it'll quiet them some. Aww, come on Sam. They are not that bad. I'm not using an X or H pipe. Of course I have them on a pretty much stock 289 and not a 390 so I imagine that would change things up a bit. I will admit at 55mph they have a drone to them but who drives 55 anyway? LOL!

Joel,With the 390 and the flowmasters, I don’t think you will make it half way to work without driving you nuts. My FB was pretty loud with a pair of 2-1/4” turbos before I went stock with it. It all depends on how you are going to use the car. Also depends on the engine build up!

Fastymz, thanks for the offer, please do keep me in mind! This open header thing in a closed garage is a litte on the loud side! And Ed, you aren't kidding that I couldn't make it half way to work with the Flowmasters: since I commute 100miles round trip on the highway, I doubt I'd make it 1/8 the way without the drone making me nuts. The drone of car as is with 3M ear-mufflers and standing 10 feet away gets to me in minutes! lol!

How easy is it to roll your car around on those dollies? I was thinking of getting a set but couldn’t figure which ones to get without parting with the big dollars. I saw a tow truck the other day that had four of those purple ones that you don’t have to use a separate jack with. I was hoping that they would fall off when he hit bumps but they didn’t. ------------------ Ed S. 68 S-code FB GT 4spd(now C6)/3.25 PS PDB 68 J-code(now 289) Cp Sprint"B" C4/3L00-9" PDB PS AC Bla-Bla-Bla 99 F150 XLT Ext/cab, 4X4, 5.4L, 3L55 [This message has been edited by 68 S-code GT (edited 08-09-2005).]

Ed, the dollies are great. I can't afford big dollar items, so I went with the cheapy Harbor Freight ones at $40/pair on sale. They didn't have a sale at the time, so I found the same ones thru MSC Industrial Supply for the same price, but had to pay shipping. They're made from really heavy gauge steel, something I was worried about before I bought them. One caster was drilled improperly, so I had to re-drill the holes to make it fit; quality control issue there. You have to push the car hard and in short pulses to get the casters to re-orientate before it'll push smoothly, but it's no prob. And there's even enough room underneath the car to roller myself around without using a jack. Hey Dreamcometrue, congrats on the H-pipe, good to hear it fixed up the drone!
