My new mechanic called me to ask if I wanted him to put a shift kit in. Are there any advantages to it other that maybe burning more rubber?

You will get much quicker and more positive shifts - depending on the kit.

When I had my '69 coupe with a 302 & C-4 trans, I put in a shift kit & I liked it alot! If you weren't getting on it, you didn't even know it was there. But if you went WOT, the shifts were more crisp and would chirp the tires at 2nd to 3rd!

Also if you haven't already, I'd also see about having a trans oil cooler installed. Being that you're in NC, I'd guess your trans could use the extra cooling....regardless if you install the shift kit or not.

Just my 2 cents,
Ryan

Quote form one of the many Shift Kit makers.

Automakers set up their automatic transmissions to slip a certain amount when they shift. This makes the shift feel smoother and less noticeable.
Unfortunately, slippage is hard on the transmission. It also slows shifts and steals some engine power before
it can get to the pavement. To reduce slippage, you can install a shift improver kit. Not only will it make your transmission last longer , it also will provide crisper, more performance-oriented shifts.

Note I added the smillie

I happen to choose TCI Master Rebuild Kit and Street Fighter Converter when I had my C4 done,,Boy was there a difference

They do actually save your transmission. Trans Go would be my first choice.

Got one in the Falcon. My C4 does have a BIG difference with it in there...really squeals the tires when shifting, and is so much quicker and positive.
