A 1988 302 block with a 60's style timing cover. I had to remove the alignment studs from the 88 block because they were to big for the 60's style timing cover. I installed the timing cover, with the oil pan off, and just noticed the timing cover is below the engine block surface-more than a 1/16". I would think this would be level with the block surface. Should I have put the oil pan on first to hold up the timing cover.Do I need to take the cover back off and start over?

The cover should be flush with the bottom of the block in order for the oil pan gasket to seal, and also the snout of the balancer needs to be centered in the middle of the seal so you won't get a leak there either.

Take it off and start over. When you install it use the harmonic balancer to hold the cover in position. You don't need to put the balancer on all the way, just far enough so that the snout pushes thru the seal and holds the cover in a centered position. Install about 4 bolts but don't tighten them until you check that the cover is flush with the bottom of the block. Wiggle it around until you're satisfied, then snug down the bolts.
