Is 20 degrees of initial advance OK to use on my 302 V8 with AT. I just put my new Pony Carb in, increased the advance to 20 and changed the centifugal stop bushing in my MSD distributor to the 18 degree stop. With these settings the engine was revved to 3000 rmp, total advance hits approx 38 degrees with the vacuum advance hose clamped and 48 degrees with the hose connected. Engine rus very good but I want to make sure I dont damage it with the initial advance set that high. I also did find TDC and marked my balancer. Thanks Ed

20 and 48 sound a little high to me. I'd expect to have 12 and 40. BUT, given something I read recently about timing marks being incorrect some % of the time and how difficult finding TDC to 0 degrees of error, who knows. What's your compression ratio and do you get any pinging when driving up hill?

All times are ET (US)
