I'm getting tired of the tri-ys that I bought for my project 66 coupe. They fit on the engine great but they touch the bellhousing on the drivers side(there was a note that there might be some modifications necessary on some bellhousings) but the main problem is the clutch linkage.I've got all the correct parts now but it still doesn't allow enough movement without hitting the pipe on the header..I can probably cut and bend and modify but I've never had to do that before and I'm thinking the headers are just a poor design for a manual trans car....Anyone have any luck with a particular brand of header on a 65-66 mustang with a manual trans?I'm not after all out performance just good fit and quality.

do a search for hooker super compitition headers as I know alot of people perfer those for fit and performance. keep in mind these a way more expensive than your tri-y.
Are you after fit or performance.hookers offer both.

I've got Flowtechs.. for 99 dollars don't think I could go wrong.

Fit great, wish I would have went for ceramic though. Guess I will when its time to replace.

Lil issue with clutch linkage, bent the bar just a hair didn't want to ding the headers and A-OK from there on out.

If yo've given up on tri-y's then I would just go with the flowtech's.
It's unusual that you are having those problems, as the original tri-y's were designed for the 65-66 chassis with a 289 and 4 speed.
Either you've got some non-original parts in there or the tri-y's you have are not of good quality.

I've got tri-y's on my '65 289 with a C-4 and it does touch a little on the bellhousing. I got mine from Mustangs Unlimited a few years ago. I'm not sure who actually manufactured them though.

I'm a little puzzled by the poor fit of the tri-ys as well.I bought them for the reason that they were used on the early shelby's and supposedly were very easy to install and had lots of clearance.I've pretty much tried both 65 and 66 mustang linkages brand new from a local repro place and neither works...My local speedshop recommended some flowtechs but I was unable to find a picture of them anywhere and was unsure about them with their very low price.Anyone have any pics or a link to their site?

jc whitney has them in the new catalog I have. List for 105.00 for your set-up. Says something about a P/S bracket that you have to order with them, so you might give them a call. They sponser us now too, so it works out good for all.

I have flowtech's ceramics - for 200 bucks. fit was perfect (but then I have a 68 which has more room). The quality was not perfect, it had a pinhole in one of the welds at the collector but the muffler guy ground it and touched it up with the welder then used a silver high temp paint on it. I didnt want to go to the hassle of sending them back to summit. They look good, and the heat is lower now than with plain iron manifolds!

Pictures of the flowtechs should be available at holleys website

not sure whether that'll bring it up, but goto summit, do a search for flowtech, and it'll show you a thumbnail.

Thats to holleys website.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the links. Those are the regular type 4 tube headers, anyone know what the other type looks like, sort of a tri-y design but not exactly(sorry I forget what they are called).I have an old set of hedmans here that I tried and they fit with zero clutch linkage problems, they don't go anywhere near the bellhousing and are fairly easy to install so I may use them.I still might check out the flowtechs if the ceramic coating is good quality.

I have Tri-Y`s on my 65 fastback 289 C-4 with power steering, and with the drop bracket I have no issues anywhere with clearance. Nothing is touching anywhere and even when I stand on it, there is no touching at all.

These headers would have worked great with a C-4,just not with the manual trans. The clutch linkage comes down right on top of the one pipe and severely limits its forward travel. In fact I could not even install the rod from the equalizer bar to the clutch fork because the equalizer had to be tipped back so far. It's a shame because they looked like very nice quality headers and were very easy to install and remove.
