I just purchased a car I found by accident. I was looking for a 1971 Torino GT when I found a 1971 Mach 1 sitting in a garage. The car is all original with under 10,000 miles. It traveled roughly around 25 miles a week. It belonged to a 97 year old woman in Southern Cal she went into a nursing home and the daughter wanted the car gone now. ONE OWNER car that was ordered with NO OPTIONS
I bought the car cheap and drove it home. I realized about halfway home that the car probably never went above 35MPH. I drove it above 70MPH on the way home. It was so tight I couldn't help it..
Well, here's the problem... I changed the oil when I got home.. Now everytime I start the car I get two thumps coming from the motor and 5 seconds of lifter clatter. It shows oil pressure.. After it warms up the motor goes completely quiet. The car runs cool and the motor is smooth after it warms up. (It does this everytime now)
My guess oil pump is going south.... Please let me know what you think. I bought the car because it ran great. When I test drove the car it was covered in cobwebs so I know it hadn't been warmed up.

I bought a low mileage 289 for my 66 coupe I was restoring but the engine was very sludgy inside and one of the lifters quit pumping oil altogether. The rocker arms were also very worn...Low mileage is great but sometimes sitting does the engine more harm than good.I'd pull a valve cover and take a peek inside and see if its sludged up.If it looks good keep an eye on the oil pressure and do a few quick oil changes to help flush it out...Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did and congratulations on a very rare find.

Sounds like an interesting find! I know whenever my car sits something breaks. Even had a tire pop on a stationary old Chrysler I was left with.

I doubt that the oil pump is bad. I would pull off a valve cover and take a look. I still have an old 289 valve cover that I cut a large slot in so I could adjust the valves on a solid lifter cam and not have oil dripping off the heads.

An engine never getting up to temp is bad for the oil. I would say the mechanicals are in great shape but there might be too much sludge everywhere.

Where is the Torino?
