I have a 68' convertible and am trying to convert to power brakes. I cannot find a brake pedal hanger for a 68' mustang with power brakes and auto tranny. I know they sell repro units for a 68' with auto tranny but without power brakes. What is the differnce in the two supports.

Thanks,
Rick

There is no difference, the only difference is in the pedal itself.

If there is no difference then why does it list as a support for AT w/o PB?

I've asked myself the same question. A while back someone told me there is an extra hole or something in the support for PB, and that the non-PB support can be drilled to make it work. Something like that.

Does anyone know for sure because I am planning to buy the repro made for non-PB and I want to make sure it will work and If modification is needed then what mod.

Mellowyellow "Pete" is a gold mine of info on exactly this kind of thing. Either wait for him to pass by, or go rattle his cage

This is a manual brake pedal and it is the same for an auto or manual trans! If you look at the first picture you will see the small hole to the left of the tag. This is where the bolt that is used to support the power brake pedal goes through the support. All 67 & 68 supports I have seen have these holes. In the second picture you will see the threaded inserts that are used to bolt the manual master cylinder through the firewall and to the support. If you grind the ones off that are where the power booster mounting studs are you will have a support for power brakes. You will also see the three holes for the clutch pedal spring retainer.

Its kind of hard to see the hole for the power brake pedal so I’ll have to dig a support out and get a better shot unless I can find one here in my computer. I don’t think I can get a picture of the power brake support being that its installed but I’ll see what I can do with getting a shot as its tight under the dash (I need glasses).

The power brake pedal mounts up higher in the support to provide different leverage than the std brake pedal. The pedal is longer. The support can be easily modified to work.

I’m trying to say that the holes are all there and all you have to do is knock out those inserts to let the booster studs through!

This is a manual brake pedal support and I circled the hole that is utilized by the power brake pedal.

These pictures below are from my 68 coupe that has the factory power brake support! It has the Midland type booster but should be the same as the Bendix.

This arrow points to the lower nut on the left side of the support under the dash that is fastened to the booster stud. The upper mounting point is the same on power and non-power brake supports.

These arrows point to the two nuts on the right side of the support under the dash that is fastened to the booster studs.

Here the arrow points to a bolt that goes through the mounting plate on the booster and screws into that upper left point that I said was the same on either support.

Just grind or drill out the three points that I show on the two under dash pictures so the booster studs will fit through and your ready to go!

I know that that bolt in the vacuum hose is ugly but I have other things I’m trying to change or fix first. Besides its been there for the last five years since I bought the car and it doesn’t leak.

Where Ed drew the red circle is where I made the hole in putting power drum brakes in a 68 cv. I had to scrounge for the right pedal as it was over 10 years ago and the pedal hadn't been repo'd yet. Sure did help the drum brakes. I swear, those brakes stopped as well as discs.

Ed and/or Mellowyellow, Is the midland booster a brand name or style of booster and is this the OE for a 68' stang w/ PB's?

Midland Ross is full name, I believe. Must be a company. Some 68's had Bendix, I guess, but never saw one. I'm getting another 68 cv, a different one that I used to own. This one, too, has power discs with the Midland.

My research strongly suggests that even though there is literature covering Bendixes in 68 Stangs, none were ever fitted except as service replacement parts. Could be wrong though.
