I'm putting a late model steering gearbox in my 64 1/2 which has a coupler that attaches the steering shaft, not like the 64 1/2, which is all one peace (gearbox and shaft). I plan on using my present steering column so I can keep the stock steering wheel. I got a shaft out of a 68 Mustang and one difference I can tell is the bearing near the steering wheel. I took everything apart and the shaft will fit in my present column (have to cut the bottom off some to accommodate the coupler) using the same bearing set up as the previous solid shaft. Everything is tight and snug where the steering wheel attaches. The only difference I can see is the coupler versus the solid shaft. The coupler does not allow the shaft to move, except in a circle same as the solid shaft. I see no need to engineer a way to put a bearing in the lower part of the column since the solid shaft did not have one. Has anyone gone down this road that can give me advice on the do don’t do it. Thanks

Doug
