Hi,I have a manual gearbox, RUG BJ1 on my 73 Mach1. One of the problems is that the back light lights no matter what gear it's in. Only when it's in neautral the light is switched off. I have chequed the switch itself and it's ok. So it is something wrong with the operatind system inside the gearbox.. Any tips for this?

I would venture to guess that it's not in the gearbox. IT's more than likely in the wiring possibly in the plastic part where the switch makes contact or a crossed wire (2 melted together)------------------ Bob Member#39 71 J code 429 SCJ-R Sportsroof C6 4:11 http://www.my429scj.50megs.com http://www.mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/Bob429.html 2004 Pure stock muscle car Drags pics now on my page. If I recall, the back-up switch is mounted externally on the shifter, so it would have nothing to do with the internals of the transmission gearbox. Usually the switch consists of a plunger that is actuated when one of the shifter rods moves against it, closing the contacts.

Please look at the picture on this web site:http://www.bildeinfo.com/Mine%20mustanger.htm A: is a hole in the "gearbox wall" where the switch is placed. Inside the wall is a piston which moves up and operate the switch. B: are 2 holes for the screws, the socket for the switch. Inside these 2 holes there's also a spring. Anyone who have seen this system before? What are the two springs for?

That's the strangest setup I've ever seen, unless its a European setup, but I doubt it. I would take the switch off the lever and make certain the backup lights work by simply touching the two wires, and they should not work if the wires don't touch. Then get an external switch, which is normally mounted back by the shifter itself and actuated by the backside of one of the shifter arms pushing in a plunger on the switch. I don't know how easy it is to get the switch over there but any Mustang vendor here usually has them.

I have a RUG-BJ1 here that is the same. The springs (and detent pins) are part of the shifter rail detents. These trans are a little different than the early ones, they have the more detents and the external switch...
