Hey gang,

Sorry to bother you guys with more questions but like I mentioned previously, I am a fairly "green" when it comes to motortype stuff. Anyway, I picked my car up from the body shop this morning, as the paint was completed. While it was in the shop, I had the bodyshop's mechanic replace the cam and lifters because they was rattling and it ended up being a lobe was flattened on my camshaft. When I went to drive it home, it started up fine but would not idle real well. The mechanic said it would have to be run awhile because it had only been started and run to move it aorund the shop. Ont he way home it started to get a heck of a spark knock which would become constant on any type of grade in the road. Then every once in awhile it would backfire or sputter and it seemed to have no power what-so-ever. As I was coasting into town (less than 10 miles driven and not over 50 MPH) it died. I could get it restarted but it would not stay running.

I phoned the mechanic and he came and looked at it and said it sounded to him like it was bad gas. Then we got it started again and he said it sounded like it wasn't getting any oil pressure (the guage is removed becuase I was taking it to reinstall the new dash and interior). I finally just threw my hands up and called a tow truck to haul it ao more reputable shop for them to look at it.

My main concern is, what is the worst case scenario? I don't mind if it has to be rebuilt but I am concerned that something major is wrong with it and my driving it those 10 miles totally FUBARed the whole motor. I was just curious if you guys would be able to ease my worries while I wait the two days for the other shop to look at it and give me an idea. Could the timeing be the culpruit or did I crack the block or something?

As always, any help or advice you guys offer is greatly appreciated,

Traumastang

he had to remove the dist to replace the cam. he might not have got the timing right. sounds like it might be way high. also by him saying that it had not been run tells me that he did not properly break in the new cam. it could be wiped out also. the odds are that it is not the oil pressure but that is a slight possibility.

Thanks for replying Capri,

That is kind of what I thought but he said he broke in the cam "according" to how he has always done it. I was just frustrated because I didn't want the motor to be ruined (ie, have to go and get another motor). It isn't that I cannot afford a new motor, it was just the fact that what makes the car interesting in my mind is that the motor/tranny/ and rearend are all original. Just gives me more to talk about when people ask me about it.

On a positive note, I did get a lot of stares and people "googling" it as they drove by. Even had one guy come up to me and say he would give me $100 bucks for it. I am sure the look on my face had something to do with the fact he just turned right around and walked off hehe.

Hook up an oil pressure guage and see what you have for pressure.

Im worried about what he did to rebuild the motor after finding a wiped lobe. Sounds like hes counting on the oil filter to catch all the pieces of metal...

It does sound like a timing problem though.

No cam break in scares me.
When the guys at the shop built mine they broke the cam in for 30 mins, drain the oil and a new filter and ran it again for 20 mins, changed the oil and another new filter.

Once finished and before I picked it up the builder drove it for 30 mins, yep another oil change and filter before I got iot,,It was clean for sure
