It seems that my starting issue could be the old original starter overheating. The cars starts fine when it's cool but after it gets warmed up if I try to restart it gives me some grief.

If I was to buy a new starter, what would you guys recommend? (1968, 289) The Ford racing mini starters? Should I use a heat shield too?

Thanks

Gregg

I used a Ford Motorsport mini starter on my stroker. Smaller size gives a lot of clearance around the headers so I don't think you will need a heat shield. I bought mine from Summit, #FMS M11000A50 $159.99.

Before you go replacing the starter, did you check your timing, distributor advance plate, vacuum advance, etc.?

Actually, I may have found out the reason for the problem at lunch. I never thought of these 2 things being related.

I have just developed a leak in my C4 tranny. The tranny guy says that the seal around the pump is gone and under load it's spewing pretty good. He specifically mentioned that the starter is getting quite wet. So it might not be heat, it might be moisture - or a combination. Anyway, I will post a question about the tranny and deal with it first, then see what happens with the starter.

Thanks for the help guys!

If it is your starter, I would just take it to a starter shop and get it fixed. Its cheaper. I have a 66 mustang with a 289 and Hooker headers and my starter works fine. I am running about 11 to 1 and it turns over pretty good. I would fix the starter and spend the rest of the money you saved on more parts.
