The paint is coming off my 'Powered By Ford' aluminum valve covers. I like them and would just rather repaint them than replace them. I assume I can paint them black and then sand the paint back off of the top of the ribs and lettering.

Does anyone have any suggestions on type of paint to use for this?

Thanks

Hi, I have little knowledge of the powered by Ford valve covers but for aluminum, in my opinion, powder coating is the best way to go. You should be able to find a local shop that does it or you can send them out.

OK, I hadn't thought of that. But can I sand the powder coating off pretty easily? That's how the lettering (and ribs) show up.
Thanks.

Somewhere, not sure where, i saw that someone makes wrinkle paint specifically for valve covers and rally pacs. I would assume that NPD or Eastwood have it. Just be sure to strip the original paint off of them first.

I used the spray can wrinkle paint and was very happy with the results. Be sure to follow the instrucions and the warmer the better it has to be warmer than 70 degrees. I did these about 8 years ago. Just sand the ribs with 80 grit paper on a block. I got the wrinkle paint at my local Car Care parts store

The finish for your repaint will only be as good as the preparation to the valve cover. Almost any type of paint can be used, if you go back to the wrinkle finish, I would suggest removing all of the original paint and get all of the oils off by washing in hot soap and water, then wash again. The wrinkle will not appear until the paint drys.

Powder coating DOESN'T come off as nearly as easy as paint. Of course, it too requires a proper surface prep to get proper adhesion. Recall, powdercoating is basically a plastic coating, so most of the time if someone wants to remove it, it is removed via sandblasting or with heat (a torch).

The only parts I'd recommend powdercoating are those that require a very tuff finish, such as chassis parts or rims.

As others have already mentioned, properly-prepped surfaces then painted with a quality paint will hold up just fine.... and they aren't THAT hard to remove in the future . JMHO.......

Good Luck!
Ryan

Hacker..hell, give me a welder and a rattle can of paint and I can make 6T6 look like Becks convertible motor. Its all show and no go, alot of bling, bling. Now look at 63Kcodes motor, its built for go, go, gone. The wrinkle paint on the valve covers and pressure pot looks good.
