I was wondering if anyone could maybe help me figure out what's wrong with my car. It all started after I had put a dual electric fan on my car. The old alternator seemed to not be getting the job done with the added electric fans, so then I added a powermaster 140 amp one wire alternator to take care of that. It all ran just fine for a little while, then it stopped starting. I put a new battery on it, and it went back to started again for a little while. Now it's back to not starting again. I've traced the wires for the fans and they seem to be installed correctly. The alternator I put on was used, so I kind of think it could be it??? Or could the started be bad now??? I can let it sit for a little while and it will turn over maybe once. The lights and the radio all come on and work ok also. Any help would greatly be apprciated, thanks.

I've never seen a one-wire alternator that actually worked and was dependable. Other than that, what kind of fan controller did you use? Is it hooked to battery power or to keyed/switched power?

My fan is controled by a thermostat switch that comes on when it warms up. It's got a fused wire that runs from the battery to a relay that goes back to the fans. This also has a wire that is connected to the key switch so that when you turn the switch off and the car off, the fans stop.

Sounds like your alternator isn't charging enough, for what ever reason. Maybe the belt is slipping. Where is the one wire alternator lead hooked up to? Is it at the solenoid or right at the battery? Is that wire thick enough?Did you disconnect the voltage regulator on the fenderwell? ------------------ reliving youth [This message has been edited by exlocal (edited 01-05-2006).] [This message has been edited by exlocal (edited 01-05-2006).]

I also used the powermaster 140 amp alternator, it failed after about a year and 3 months. I do haave my battery in the trunk and they say the one wire alts are not the greatest in that application.I'd remove it an get it tested or you can use the remove a bat cable while running trick, its hard on the alternator but it works, if the engine dies the alt is bad. I had a gm alternator fail on one of my work vans and usually its voltage, but this one didn't produce enough amps. If it is bad and not under warranty, jegs and summit sell one wire generic gm alts for pretty cheap but they dont fit the ford right. I took the front half of my powermaster alt case and put it on my 100.00 jegs alternator and it fit perfect for one of my work trucks So far I bought another 140 amp powermaster alt and it has worked perfect so far. I did make a 2g wire to take the place of the supplied wire from PM.. SO FAR SO GOOD. my 67 vert http://htwheelz.smugmug.com
