Hi everyone, a friend of mine pointed me to your forum both because it has a lot of great information on it, and for possible solutions to my problem. I have a '68 GT Convert. with a '69 351W in it. The restoration is almost finished and when I tried to start it up...no luck. The engine turns over great. I have 10v at the wire that attaches to the coil. when I attach the wire the voltage drops to 4v when measured at the positive coil post. I have tried changing coils with no resultant voltage change. I have also swap Petronix units with no change either. I have tried a starter wire and that brings a full 12v to the coil post, but still no spark at the plug. I again swapped out coils with the stater wire and the results were the same. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try next? It is extremely frustrating to be so close to enjoying the Mustang again and have this happen. Also, for what it is worth, it all worked before I took it apart. Thanks, Craig Stephens

Craig, Welcome to M&M! That friend gave you great advice, you'll like it here  Try it with the points instead of the pertronics. Make sure the points contact surface is clean, no corrosion or residue from filing the points. Try the points both with the key igintion wire and then again with the full 12 volt jumper wire from the battery. Something has to give you a spark to the spark plugs! If it hasn't started in a year you will probably have to prime the carb with a few ounces of gasoline

Good morning and welcome to M&M  I like to start with the real easy stuff...Distributor must be timed on cylinder #1 and wired to the camshaft's firing order... distributor rotation is counter clockwise- Cap and rotor must be installed (its overlooked more often than you might think)- Sounds like you have voltage to the coil, but nothing at the spark plugs... Do you have spark comming from the coil? Craig, You haven't changed anything since the last time the car ran? Didn't change the timing, didn't replace the plug wires, etc? Trying to eliminate the possibilities and narrow it down to just one thing...and I think that one thing is you don't have spark, right? Are you using a loose spark plug to check for spark? Hook it up to a splug wire and ground it against the block, when you crank the engine you should see the spark jump the gap.

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't have the plug I was watching for a spark grounded to the block, I will try that. Installing points will have to wait until I return from a trip in a few days.Thanks.

Scott HActually, no I have not changed anything under the hood since the engine was last running. The first two years I had the car, I concentrated on engine and drivetrain. After that was squared away, I went after body and interior. The car was driven from the trailer to my garage after the body work was done. I have had the main wiring redone by Pat White in Dallas since the car was last started. Even with that change, I still have voltage at the coil from the wire which passes through the main harness and ignition switch. Craig

Problem solved, I found a slight wiring problem. The battery was in backwards! I am one embarrrassed newbie. It also explains why my clock didn't work in the instrument cluster.

I don`t know if you can speak for all of us. I personally have never ever made a mistake when working on my cars or somebody else's car. I must be one of the few that has not made mistakes, but what really burns my butt is, when I go back down in the morning to work on my car after a good nights sleep, I find that somebody has gotten into my garage and changed some of the work that has been done and I have to go back over my work again to fix what THEY have messed up.
