Which key goes to what?On my 65, I got one set of keys. They have all the appearance, being extremely worn, of being the original keys. My round key fits the ignition and my sqaure key fits the trunk. But my reproduced original owners manual that I bought from NPD states the the square key is ignition and round is trunk. I just saw something else online that seemed to match my keys. Also, my keys work with the 'notches' up, not down as I might expect. I just ordered some key blanks from NPD and am just trying to get it right. Anybody got an opinion? Thanks. ------------------ Bryan - 1965 coupe / front bench seat / 289 / T5.

You may want to go ahead and get a new set of matching ignition and door lock cylinders. That way you'll know you have the only set of keys. They're really easy to install.

On my early 65 coupe the square key fits the doors and ignition. The round one the trunk only. All are notches up.------------------ -351w Bored .30-351w Heads Fully Ported -Custom made Ford 9" 3.70 Michael Pics

Me too. All I've seen is square for door and ignition, round for trunk.

Wow you guys are way more observant then me. I only keep the two keys on my mustang key ring so I have 50-50 chance of being right the first time. Now as for knowing if it goes upside down or right side up? I'm just happy that they fit eventually. ------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs HOOD HACKERS DELIGHT! Woops. I'm giving away my history of 55 Chevy's and 69 Camaro's. But I finally learned the error of my ways. I really like my new Mustang. quote: Originally posted by capri man: the square key is the ign and the round one is the trunk and door locks.
OK, it looks like I have a consensus on this. Don't know how mind got switched. And new matching locks is on my list of things to do... Thanks! ------------------ Bryan - 1965 coupe / front bench seat / 289 / T5.

The '65 stock only has one key for the door lock and ignition (square key). The other key goes to the trunk (round one). I have yet to see anyone who produces a lock set where the trunk is keyes to the ignition and door locks. So there is no reason for him to get the lock set unless they are worn as he will still end up with two keys . ------------------ Tim M&M Member #35 1965 Mustang coupe, 200 I6, Holley 2300, Clifford header, true duals w/ 26" Smithys 1988 Mustang GT AOD vert, 15.810 @ 88.871 mph 100% stock w/ no traction 1991 Ford Festiva, 30+ mpg, enough said http://www.mustangsandmore.com/ubb/I65Stang.html

I think he meant more along the lines that he will be the only person with a set of keys for the car. The previous owner could have an "extra" set lying around his house, if you know what I mean... David F.

Yeah, you are right lol, I apologize (was reading fast). Btw, classic Mustangs are very easy to steal so I wouldnt be that worried about a PO .

Yeah, like anybody really needs a key to get into or steal an old Mustang! But I knew a guy that had a 65 with a very finicky 6 cylinder engine. Seems like if you didn't set the choke just right and work the gas pedal a certain way the car was near impossible to start. I offered to rebuild the carb, but he said if it started easier he was afraid someone could steal it, or worse yet, maybe his teenage kids would want to borrow it! How's that for an anti-theft system!?!
