I put an edelbrock 1406 on my 289 A code a little over a year ago, and have been generally happy with it over the tired 4300 I replaced it with. But I have a couple of issues with it; first, my A/C bracket that goes to the manifold won't fit with the edelbrock. And, I just changed the manifold and carb on a friend of mines 68 Cougar to a stock 4bbl manifold with a basic 600cfm holley. His stock 302 came alive with this combo, making mine seem weak! So I'm thinking of going with a Holley and I saw a 570cfm Street Avenger on e-bay brand new for $282. Is this a better carb than the basic Holley my friend bought from Shuck's? I'm staying with the stock manifold for now because my car is almost totally stock and I do show it occasionally. I get enough trouble from people for having Cragars on it! So which Holley do I need?

I like my Avenger. I bought a new Street Avenger 670 for my mild 351W from a fellow M&M member, bolted it on, and it was set to go. Replaced a recently rebuilt Carter 625 with it and what a diff. The Avenger is a good carb to go with, I'd recommend it.------------------ Gary M '70 Mustang 63b SportsRoof '95 Mustang GT coupe and 5 more classic Fords

Thanks for the replies. I guess what I'm looking for is what is the difference between a 4160 holley and a street avenger. Is there something that makes the street avenger a better carb? It also seems odd that they are rated at 570,670, etc. instead of the normal 600, 750, etc. CFM.

The Avenger serie is more user friendly (easier adjustments). Considering your engine, a 570 with Vac secondaries (like the avenger)is probably an excellent choice.

I agree go with the 570 if you plan to keep it mostly stock. They are great looking carbs too.

OK, I'm still on the fence here.... The street avenger does look nicer, has the sight glass for the float adjustment, it's a 570 vs. the 600 (still not clear about that small of a difference, and why). It also appears to have seperate inlets for the primary and secondary bowls, not so sure that's a real plus for me. Still, being rather frugal (or cheap) the standard 600 is appealing because I can get one for over $100 less. Is the avenger worth the extra $100?

The street avenger gives you external float adjustment, easy secondary spring changes, and slight plugs. I think it's well worth the $100 thats just my opinion.http://holley.com/types.asp?type=7 http://holley.com/types.asp?type=9 ------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs

Use those sight plugs for adjustment purposes, but then change them to the regular brass plugs. The plastic plugs have been known to crack!

OK, I'm just about sold, thanks for the input guys! Still not crazy about having to split the fuel line, though. And for a car that only gets about 1500 miles a year, I doubt that the sight plugs will crack for a long time. But I'll keep an eye on that. How about the effect of heat on a holley. I've noticed my edelbrock seems to have a warm start problem when it's warm outside. I think it may be boiling the gas out of the float bowls. I have the stock spacer in there, but I was thinking about putting in a heat spacer gasket I happen to have for the edelbrock on the bottom of the stock spacer. Should I bother?

I can't comment on the warm start prob since I haven't run into that yet. But if you go with the Avenger, there is a little kit you need to get for the automatic trans kickdown, if your car has an auto. You can get it from Holley.------------------ Gary M '70 Mustang 63b SportsRoof '95 Mustang GT coupe and 5 more classic Fords

Thanks again for the insight and advice, guys. I went ahead and ordered the 570 street avenger for $283 shipped. Of course, if I'm not happy I'll have to hold you all responsible!

If he has a 289 A code in a 65, 66, or 67 they don't use a rod from the carb to the trans as a kickdown. 65 uses a bellcrank type linkage on the manifold and 66/67 use a cable at the bottom of the accelerator arm (assuming stock linkage and stock c4 trans).
