does any one know what the timing has to be on a 302 for a 68 mustang

welcpme to M&M : sit down and stay a while. probably about 10-12 degrees at idle with the vacuum line off the dist.

Welcome Cesar,

Chilton's says 6 degrees BTDC at 500rpm for both manual and auto.

But... I thought it was "advance it till' it pings when you romp on it, then back off a smidge". I think the technical term is "Timing it with your right foot".

sorry to borrow this thread. I am still learning the timing thing. Don't have a timing lite and have read a lot about the ping.

What is the ping? I plan on doing the timing by ear again with the new motor (don't have a lite) and will start at TDC and advance until it idels nice. Then take the rpms up and see how it does.

Is that right?

That will work! You can pick up a lite at any auto parts house. They don't cost a lot.
