This bellhousing was a poorly painted orange.

But I couldn't see putting an ugly orange bellhousing on this engine.

So I hit it with some paint remover planning on maybe blue or black. When I hit the little leftover paint with a 4" fine wire wheel I found that only a couple extra seconds polished the aluminum! So I spent 30 minutes doing this. I'm sure it will oxidize but it's gonna look great for the "on the hook" pictures.

Why not just add a clear coat to the bellhousing. Nice engine though. Im planning on doing the same thing as you did. I am going to leave the timing cover and water pump unpainted (theyre both aluminum)and probably do that with the heads i plan on getting (also aluminum). Remember to take lots of pictures... Thanks gjz, I had my Toploader gone through and the guy that did it for me put the case in the parts washer and painted the top cover black. When I got it back I hit the nice clean, but ugly (no pun intended), case with some Cast Blast. Looks nice. All hooked up ready to slide into the engine bay is gonna be super cool!

I had thought about putting a clear coat on it but not sure about adhesion or the clear turning yellow. I figure it is a low visibility part after it goes in and the worst that could happen leaving it bare is oxidization. Anyone have a good, multi year, experience clear coating aluminum?

Scoop, it is probably true. I knew a guy that had a nicely detailed engine that he put in a Cuda. During cam break in it overheated. Blew a hose and sprayed anti frees ALL OVER the engine compartment. I saw it immediately after. It was sad.

I love seeing the brass freeze plugs.
I don't know about you guys but when I paint a motor I assemble it without gaskets and paint it. Then I put it back together with gaskets. That way you have the cork showing, which really makes it look good.

Looks Good!

I think you should be o.k. with a coat of clear on the bellhousing.Maybe try an auto paint and supply store for something higher quality, or get real fancy and have it powder coated clear.Looks real nice so far!

Eastwood Diamond Clear has good results without yellowing, and will adhere just fine.

Thanks Sig, that looks like the ticket. Hmmm... I bet that would keep that Alumi intake looking good too! I should have hit the timing chain cover also but it's too late now.

I think that even if you did spray it with some clear and it did yellow some that it would still look better than a bare piece of oxidized aluminum.

Try hi-temp aluminum spray paint. I did the original distributor and it looks factory fresh a year later. It won't yellow, and unlike polished metal, it is less likely to reflect shadows and appear dark, thus standing out better. Charlie

Must be a stainless brush. Stainless leaves aluminum looking really pretty, regular steel doesn't do near as good of a job.

Looks Good!
