I have an Autolite 4100, Model C5ZF D, 1.08 carb on my stock, 67, 289 engine, hooked to a C4 Auto trans. I have no problems with the mechanics of the carb, it performs flawlessly. My questions refer to the set up of the carb. As it stands now I baby the car (I can't remember the last time the secondaries kicked in), yet my mileage is terrible---about 10 MPG. By itself I would shrug my shoulders and move on, but coupled with the poor mileage, I have another concern-- the exhaust STINKS!!! It stinks while I'm driving, bad enough to almost make me sick, regardless of whether the windows are open or closed. When I pull into the garage and immediately shut it down and close the overhead door, the odor is so strong it permeates the rest of the house for hours. I have to leave the overhead door open and run a fan to clear out the smell. There is no noticeable smoke from the exhaust pipes, and the pipes themselves have no holes. I've checked under the car for openings where the fumes might be entering the car, but all seems tight. I have duals exiting under the valance, with Twin tip design tips extending about 4" from the valance. Putting these two problems together it would appear that the carb is running rich. Checked the choke, it's wide open at operating temperature, no problem there. Engine is freshly tuned (plugs, wires, cap, new Pertronix Ignitor 1, fuel filter, etc. The carb is spotless. So, I'm looking at jet sizes. I am aware the carb is for a 66 289, what I don't know is whether the Primary jet should be sized for the model carb(C5ZF D) or for the engine it's on (67,289). I haven't been able to find a chart showing the jet size for different year carbs or engines. Can anyone tell me what the primary jet size should be for this engine/carb set up? And most of all, am I correct in my assumptions about the problem being running rich, or could the mieage problem and exhaust stink be caused by something else? Any help would be appreciated, my wife is starting to make noises about the stink in the house and garage, and we all know what a living hell they can make life when they start to nag, nag, nag!!! Besides, she's right, I have to do something, because I'm getting disgusted with the smell, also! Thanks in advance for your responses. Jay67fast

Nice site - at least it reads good. Doesn't look like Pony Carbs will be sponsoring that site anytime soon.

I was trying to track down a strange rotten "burnt" smell in the boot (trunk ?) of my FB, it wasn't until I was changing the diff center that I realized that the oil in there can stink, I haven't looked yet but I think the fumes exiting the breather tube are making there way into the boot.Maybe this is worth checking ????? What kind of stink? Does it smell like raw gas and burns your eyes? If it is, I had a similar situation. It was a small vacuum leak on the intake causing the car to run really lean, which actually smelled like the car running really rich. Good luck.------------------ reliving youth

There can be a number of reasons with the carb that can be causing this. I would agree that there is a ricj condition. I would say to go ahead and get a rebuild kit for the carb for your year engine. I don't know how old you are but if you are not used to being around old cars they do smell far more than any modern car. Modern cars have eliminated most all of the smoke and smells that us older people grew up on. Personally I am nostalgic for the old engine smells. Make sure your trunk seal is in good shape. If it's not it will allow exhaust fumes into the car, especially with the tips exiting just past the rear valence. The air swirls back up and right into the car when your driving.Along with checking out your carb you might want to check the timing as well.------------------ 68 J-Code,Sprint,306 4 speed,4.11s 13.69@101............... 66 coupe 289 4 speed, 3.20 cruiser http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy2.html
