I am replacing the tailight panel in my 65 fastback to get rid of the 4 lights a PO had put in. When I got everything disassembled I found a lot of rust on the trunk floor. I am going to need to replace both floor boards.

My question is, do I rest the car on jack stands and remove the rear leaf springs to take any pressure off the frame rails? I would think so but have never done this and thought I should ask a lot of questions first and do it right the first time.

Thanks in advance - Phil

Whew, you're in for a treat. I'm not sure of the process involved, but I would assume that supporting the car by the rear frame rails would make the trunk area sag a little. Dunno, someone will have the right answer for you.

I know I am in for a treat! It has to be done. I can't not fix it if I see a problem. I plan on taking my time, doing a lot of measuring and fitting, and welding last!

I was planning on supporting it in front of the axle if that helps.

I would place my jack stands under the frame rails ,near the front eye in the leaf spring and another set under the rear end after disconnecting the rear eye of the leaf springs.I don't think anything will sag because you don't have an engine to support like the front. You may not even have to remove the leaf spings totally. This way you don't have to mess with the rear end,u-bolts ,brake lines...etc of course the gas tank must go ....time for a new one if its original. Good luck !

I would use ramps or something like that and keep the car on it's wheels. Think I would also, just, cut the floor that is over the rear frame rail first. Reason: It is quite possible that the frame rails MAY have some rust. Often, if the trunk floor is rotted, so are the frame ends. Knowing the extent of rust will then dictate how to go about the repairs. If the frame ends are bad, then the car will need support at the rear as the spring will have to be undone from the frame.Unfortunately, rust spreads and that area is prone to rust in Northern cars more than others

Thanks for all the responses.

I am pretty sure the frame ends are good. I have sanded and poked at them alot.

The rust in the trunk is due to a leaky backlight that no one ever fixed. The car must have sat outside at somepoint in it's life. The rust is from the inside of the trunk to the outside.

The car is from TX and the rest of the car is really clean. The leaking rear window has caused havoc though.

I plan to take a lot of pics as I go along. I am limited in time since I have 2 kids under 5 and a wife that works a lot at her own business! But, I plug away when I get the chances.

Keep the suggestions coming! This is the best site in the world Mustangs.
