The guy who sold me my Mustang said it had a 428 from a '66 Galaxie. In 15 years I haven't been able to confirm the engine size. The only numbers I've ever been able to find on the block are 352 and C6ME-A, both of which apparently indicate some type of FE. I'm going to pull the C6 out soon and the flexplate or the back of the block may give me a clue as to displacement. Anyone else know of any indicators as to which engine I have?

How many bolts does each exhaust port have? Look along the oil pan rail for a serial number. 5th character would/should be a "Q".------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." I've been doing this FoMoCo stuff a couple of weeks now John, and I'll be damned if I don't seem to be getting the hang of it. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." C6ME-A blocks can be 390 or 428 Regular 428's have a 8 bolt exhaust pattern. 390GT/428PI/(68)427s and rumours of some of the 428CJs have 12 bolt flanges.. 428CJ/SCJ's have 16 bolt flanges..The flex plate is unique to the 410/428's as they are externally balanced... Alex, the exhaust manifolds have two bolts (one on each side of the exhaust port) but the head has a third bolt (at the top of the exhaust port) that the manifold doesn't use.Where might I look on the oil pan rail for the serial number. Do I have to pull the pan? I found a single "A" stamped at the way back of the block at the bottom. Could I remove the dust cover and look for triangular cutouts or weights on the flexplate? Thanks.

There should be a balance weight on the flywheel/Flexplate.

Sounds like a 428 non CJ style head so far. Look along the passenger side near the front. You do not have to remove the pan. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." That would be a good start. You also might try measuring the stroke with a small dowel of wood or a screwdriver through an open spark plug hole.I've never had much luck identifying FEs by casting numbers.Alot of them are just blobs and barely readable while others such as the C6ME and 352 were used on many blocks so they don't really help much.If you do a search there was a similiar thread not too long ago with lots of ways to identify a 428.The parts on an FE are so interchangeable that I only trust measuring the bore and stroke as absolute proof.

I looked at the block again for numbers. I can't find anything on the right at the front.I did find "1131" stamped in front just to the right of the water pump. I found a date stamp for August 1966 above the oil filter. I pulled the C6 inspection plate and found eight triangular cutouts in the flexplate. Thats a good sign, right? I can't see weights but I think I'm looking at the wrong side. Thanks for the advice.

My guess would be that it is a 428 based on the information so far.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." This is my flexplate. The balance weight says 'C6SP-6375-A.' There is also an 'A' cast into the back side of the block. ------------------ 1968 Mustang 428, not original, $1200

The A indicates it's a 428. The heads may the Galaxie heads redrilled to fit the Mustang manifolds or may be 390 GT heads, no better or worse than what a 66 428 came with.
