I spent three ours last night trying to get this out and I think I took too many beer breaks. I know these are a pain to get out and have done it before but this one is really in there. Copper washers are off and I see that someone used a gasket but I can’t tell if they used something to glue it in. Just looking for some tips from you guys to see if maybe there is something I didn’t try.

Try gently tapping a screwdriver or gasket scraper between the housing and the center section. try it in a couple of places around the gasket parting line. Then take another beer break.

Uh, you DID remove the axles first, correct? I have had stubborn 3rd members before, if it won`t move at all, try using a floor jack under the yoke to break it free from the gasket surface, then it should wiggle out.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@131.5mph 1.32 60 foot 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. 12.36@106.88mph 1.63 60 foot 59 Meteor (Canadian Ford) 2 dr sedan 332, auto 74 F350 ramp truck 390 4spd

Of course I pulled the axles, this isn’t my first day at the rodeo! I tried the floor jack but it didn’t budge. Before I gave up for the night I put the floor jack back under there to give it some pressure. I’ll be able to check on it later when my wife gets home (2 ½ & 5 ½ year old to keep an eye on).

Be sure to remove all the coper washers first. Then I use a large rubber mallet tap all around the 3rd member. Look for area where the 3rd member meets the housing. Were you can tap a large screwdriver or scraper between the two(Like Mark said). Go slow it will break loose. Ijust removed the 3rd member from my 8" rear end. I didn't take the time to jack the car up much. It's a heck of a lot more easy to get the rear of car as high as you can. I got stuck under the exhaust system not sure how I did it. But my two dog thought it was darn funny. ------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs HOOD HACKERS DELIGHT! My Pics

Scoop is definitely right about getting the car high enough. I wonder if I could talk the wife into a lift for the garage? Hmmm... My 9" wasn't going anywhere until I tapped the scraper between the housing and punkin' then BAM! Done deal. I wish it went in that easy.

Please excuse my ignorance but I know nothing about rear ends although I plan on working on mine very soon.Is this center carrier the pinion, something internal, or the external case? Do you need to remove it to say change the front seal? I really need a layman's explanation of differential maintenance including ring and pinion, positraction, and seals. Anyone got a good link or something? ------------------ 1968 Mustang 428, not original, $1200

I did get it out, after whacking it with the BFH it didn’t even leak any fluid. So I took a small crap screwdriver and started hammering that between the housing and the carrier. It started to separate but still no gear lube. I though maybe it was next to being dry! Took another screwdriver and poked it around and jackpot. Whatever they used they used it on both sides of the gasket to glue things up. It was real hard to scrape the gasket off too.

Took away all of my questions on whether I was doing it correctly or not. Search on Ebay for badshoe or you can buy it directly from Ken. I seem to have a leak at the rear end. Do you think it's the pinion oil seal? Can I pull the drive pinion retainer witout upsetting the rest of the differential carrier?[This message has been edited by zieber (edited 04-27-2006).]
