On to my next project...installing a new A/C compressor and dryer on my 67. It's getting hot around here! Since I have to buy a new compressor (old one is gone), I thought I'd go with R134 refrigerant. Is there anything else I'd need to make the switch? Any A/C tips welcome.

R134 is pretty much the way to go...less expensive, almost as efficeint...plus, a lot of shops arent licenced to work with R12 anymore, but most shops have no issues with R134.

I think Sanden makes compressors that work with stock Mustang A/C parts, plus theyre not half as ugly as those stock ford units.

When 134A first came out the shop attached to the tow-truck place I worked for sold a couple $1,000 plus conversion kits.

Since you have to buy a few parts just go with the 134A compressor.

I wouldn't worry about replacing every seal in the system unless it just won't hold 134A, and then it probably wouldn't hold R12 anyways.

Example, for about 60,000 miles I ran 134A in the R12 system in my oldsmobeater as kinda an experiment. First time it leaked out after fifteen minutes of driving. So we loaded up with leak finder, charged it again, and it held for a couple years. Wasn't as cold in that R12 system, especially at idle, but it was sure cheap.

contact the folks at Classic Auto Air (813)251-2356. They can probably help you out. I'm working on putting my A/C system back together. I put a new 6-circuit condenser and new evaporator in mine. The compressor is 1993 era. I'm currently fabrication hoses to hook it all up.

The only potential problems are if you're going to use the original condenser and evaporator. The original parts were designed for the properties of R12, which is a more efficient refrigerant than R134. What that means is your original condenser and evaporator are too small for the properties of R134. This means that the AC system won't get the air as cold as it would with R12.

For example: I did the R134 conversion on my Explorer. Before the switch the air coming out of the vent was around 4o degrees. Now the coldest it will get is around 52 degrees.

The real way to do it is to replace the condenser and evaporator with ones sized for R134 so that you will get 40-45 degree air. If you're going with a complete aftermarket setup it will already be sized for R134.

134? Won't get as cold. Done a few. Need
a different expansion valve, dryer. Need to
flush the condenser and evaporater. Take the
compressor off, drain it and refill it with
134 oil. put it back together and pump it
down and fill it up. It should work fine.

Stay away! Some have "Propane" mixed in.

I did it on my pickup. Took about 2 hours to do the whole thing, including evacuation. Cost was a couple hundred as opposed to the $750+ the shops were asking.

I used the freeze 12 and it works just as good as R 12 or better.

This Freeze 12 sounds like what I'm looking for! I really wasn't fond of the idea of spending $1000 for a new compressor, condenser, evaporator, valve, dryer, etc. when all I needed to replace was the compressor and dryer. Nor was I fond of having a less efficent A/C. I live near Houston. Where in July and August, the devil has to go back to hell because it's too hot. Anyone have problems with Freeze 12?

I have a used compressor which I think has r12 oil in it. I purchased every other parts new that's compatible with r134 and r12. Can I just flush the oil from the compressor so I can use r134 on the system? or should I replace or rebuild the compressor?

you can also use 414b refrigerant it works with all oils just have to weigh in charge for a maxium of 80% orginal, and it is colder than r-12
