Has anyone ever heard of welding the cowl shut thus preventing further rust damage? Also weren't the 'R' model cars welded shut? thanks for any info!

Rust is like Cancer, you have to remove it all, there's no sure way to stop it.But I been thinkin' about a non metal coating to remove the chance of rust stating all over again once repaired, but that 5-7 uears down the road at least Sam

Be careful when you seal up spaces. You can still have condensation form inside. You might be better off just making sure the cowl drains are always clear so the car can dry out between rains.------------------ '73 Convertible, 351C 2V '91 LX Convertible 5.0 Member: Valley Forge Mustang Club "The best things in life are free, but the really kick-a** things cost a fortune." "Rust NEVER Sleeps" Weld them shut & there will be NO WHERE for water to go but evaporate which will lead to more rust (speaking from experience as a blacksmith who works with High Carbon Steel that LOVES TO RUST if you look at it wrong). Don't go out in the rain, BEST WAY TO PREVENT FURTHER RUST.

Like with women, using the proper protection is the best solution. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '70 Mustang Convertible - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 XL

Like a buddy of mine told me the other day after a "fight" with his girlfriend."...never trust anything that bleeds for 3 to 5 days and doesn't die..." I thought I bust a gut laughing he was so serious. Sam

Very funny For some reason (?), this got me to thinking about how women haemophiliacs get by, and I am now a wiser man! Severe haemophilia is confined to men. Are we officially off subject now???

If they bleed for 5 days and don't die ...BEWARE!!! But seriously, Best way to deal with rust is to grind it away or cut it out. DON'T weld it shut and think it'll go away...IT'S ALIVE!!! [This message has been edited by Blacksmith (edited 04-26-2006).]

Ok, gotta chime in. I think you are missing his point. If you weld the vents shut it won't stop the rust or help the rust condition at all. It would however stop water from leaking into the car and damage the floors.I think if you plan to go to the trouble of welding the vents closed you might as well pull the cowl and fix it right.
