I am in the process of replacing the straight Monte Carlo bar in my 66 V8 coupe with a curved one due to interference with the new taller distributor. The bolts don't match up. I can get the upper bolts to match, but then the lower bolt holes (the vertical ones) don't match. I can get the lower two to line up, but the upper are about 3/8" off. Anyone have this problem? I've already let the towers relax, and I've already got an export brace. And I already had an MC bar on, so I know one fits.

This seems to be a mismatch of how the holes are drilled, since this isn't a question of fitment (it mocks up fine). It's a question of the 8 bolts not matching their respective holes. I can see several options--first I can enlarge/redrill the MC bar holes (although I can see where that allows for undesirable movement) or I can use a BFH and prybar to bully the bar in place. I can also return it or I can re-bend it. Any suggestions?
Daniel

I would return it, with MC bar I have the lower 2 holes and the rear top hole fit existing bolts, I had to drill the inner fender for the front top.

In your case if the bottom 2 line up and not the rear top (and vica-versa)then it is wrong or been mis-drilled.

Just my 02 cents worth allowing for the exchange rate

Maybe different manufacturer=different bolt hole pattern.
If they are close, drilling out the existing holes in the inner fenders shouldn't hurt if you torque the bolts down good.

Since it is only around $25 for a replacement one, I think I might keep it and try some mods on it. I'm thinking of a removeable, heim-jointed one like Cory's (427Fastback) might be a sweet setup... I've got some aircraft-type pins I can use, and can put down a fair weld, so it's worth playing with. What do you think???

I never found a out of the box M/C that would fit properly. To many variables in the cars and the bars, and usually a bitch to get in and out. Thus the need to design my own system.

A little tip for those who choose to make their own adjustable one.Dont use Heim joints.Because the ball rotates in all directions you can not lock down the bar in a fixed position (it will rotate on the bushings)I make my own adjustable ends with fixed bushings .You really only need to adjust the length, not misalignment of your mounts..

Thanks for the tip, Cory! That's something I hadn't considered since I thought about it with a straight bar. With the curved one, you want no movement of the curved part!

Cory,

What do you use to build your own M/C? I gave up on trying to buy one that fit. They don't make one that fits a 67 with a 5.0 complete with A/C. I like the adjustable idea. I'm in the process of building one that peaks over the top of the distributor. Making it adustable would be sweet.

I generally make the bars from one inch OD stainless roughly .100 wall and have them custom bent to the shape I want,or bend them myself.I made some extra's of the last one.(same one in pics of my car)

The fender brkts are made from aluminum or stainless depending on the theme and look the customer wants.

If i can thread the tubing I do otherwise I Tig weld a nut on the ends.I machine all my own adjustable ends but you could buy fixed rod ends from some where and build around those.QA1 shocks has a good assortment of rod ends.Or a marine shop that sells sail boat stuff as they use them for rigging.

All my bars are different as I build them to suit the shape of the air cleaner and to match your engine comp.

If you want to know more or want some help feel free to e-mail me..

Cory,

What's your email address. Would you put the adjustments on the sides or just one in the middle?
