I have to replace the steering box in my 65 with p/s. Any web sites that give detailed instructions?

I don't know of any website detailing the process, but it is covered in the Ford factory shop manual.

Engine still in the car?

I would start by taking out the steering column, and then for additional working room I'd remove the driver's seat.

Detach the pitman arm from the gearbox if possible, it might be easier than taking the pitman arm off the steering linkage.

You may need to remove the left exhaust manifold for clearance, may also have to support the engine with a jack and a 2x4 under the oil pan so you can get the left motor mount out of the way.

Then take off 3 bolts holding the gerbox to the frame and snake the box (with the long steering shaft) down and out of the car. The steering shaft remains as part of the box and it extends thru the firewall, under the dash, and all the way up to the steering wheel. That's why I suggest taking out the driver's seat, gives you more working room.

Thanks for the pointers. Do I have to get the car on a hoist in order to snake the box and shaft out through the bottom of the car?

Not a hoist or a lift, but raising the front end and securing it with jack stands is a MUST.

All times are ET (US)
