Most well known is the GT in Bullitt.
But rumor has it that there was a second car, non-GT also used. I also believe one was a 4 spd and one was an automatic.
Both 390.
One was crushed, the other is hidden away on a farm somewhere.

Think that Joyce is on the money. Wolfgang, in Germany, is the foremost authority on Bullitt lore! He's been to SF, driven the route, not in his 68!, On my new computer, lost my old wallpaper-now have a pic of that famous 68 cresting a hill in SF. A classic picture that takes up the entire screen.Think I'll be keeping it awhile.

If you listen to the shifts in the chase sceen you realize the transmission was one of those rare 18 speed units. There are more up shifts than ....

If you got a 390 engine you got a 390, I didnt think the 390 GT had any more horepower? I thought the GT was just window dressing (badges, tailpipes, trim etc..)

but supposedly there were two cars, one a GT and one not. All the badges were removed

I`m not positive on the 68`s, but the 66 & 67 390 "GT" engine had some differances over the regular 390 4 barrel engine. The GT version first came out in 1966, in the Fairlane & Comet GT`s, and carried VIN code S, while the regular 390 4 barrel was code Z. The GT engine used a larger hydraulic cam, (this GT cam later was installed on the 428CJ engines). The GT heads were identical to the plain 390 Fairlane 2V & 4V heads, but came with stronger valve springs, and 1 piece steel valve spring retainers. The regular 390 had 2 piece retainers. The 66 GT engine also had a 600 cfm Holley 4 barrel with a chrome open element air cleaner, the 67 air cleaner was not open, but did have a screen mesh opening in the base. In the Fairlane & Comet models, the Z code engine, as well as a 2V version were available in the Fairlane,500, and 500XL models, as well as Ranchero`s and wagons, the S engine was only used in the GT package. I don`t believe that the Z engine was used in 67 or 68 Mustangs, only the S code engine, although a 2 barrel was available for whatever reason. I also believe that the 68-69 engines had a Autolite 4300 carb, rather than the Holley.

That all rings true to me.

But another odd "twist" is that my '67 NON-GT S-code 390 coupe, which is an all original unrestored car, is fitted with a closed air cleaner with chrome lid and a skinny snorkel. But it's definitely the S-code "GT" engine with the 16-bolt manifolds...

Odd that Ford would use a different air-cleaner on non-GT 390's.

Oops, in my defense it was many years ago. Funny I would get that wrong as I like the 67' better because of the fins on the fake brake cooler. Apologies to any die hard 68' fans. I do know it went pretty good, was red, and looked cool.

I thought that a GTA stands for automatic and the gt stands for gt in mustang.I did'nt know for sure, thanks. But I have a 390 in my 69 and it is different than a 390 gt engine, at least what I have been told before.I don't have the large S casting on my intake manifold. But it is still a S code and the numbers match the intake, what I meant is that I heard that you had your 390 gt engine that had the same cam and some stuff as the 428 cobra jet engine. Then you have the one that I have in my 69 that was alot toned down version than the kind that came with the like large S casting number. The reason I heard that mine was not a gt was because in 69 they were real rare for a 390 gt engine this is what somebody told me.They could be lying and telling a bunch BS but somebody told me that on another website that I go to.That is what I meant by if it is 390 gt engine or 390 engine like I got in my 69 in bullit. Thanks Dave
