I noticed yesterday that the 28 spline axles out of the 69 9” rear in my 68 coupe are much beefier than the set I have out of a 67 9”. The earlier pair neck down quit a bit where the 69 axles look almost the same diameter throughout. Anybody notice this before?I also found two reasons of why the left seal was leaking. 1. Is that the surface of the housing tube where the seal goes in was nicked up from someone trying to get the seal out with God knows what. 2. Is that the area of the axle that the seal rides on has what looks to be a hit from a grinder. Maybe someone who worked on it the past cut the bearing off with a grinder and slipped (it wasn’t me because I actually broke down and paid to get the Chinese bearings pressed off). Do they make a Speedy Sleeve to fix the area where the seal rides on the axle?

http://www.mustangsplus.com/tech/bearings/rearbear.htmlThe link above does not answer your question but it has some good information on Mustang rear wheel bearing repair. Several years ago I had a GM car that had the rear wheel bearing fail and it wore a groove in the axel. I found a bearing and seal kit called an "Axel Saver". This was one piece with both the bearing and seal. This effectively puts the seal in a different position on the axel so the seal runs on an un-worn surface. I have searched with google and not found it so I don't know if they still make these. The housing can probably be repaired or at least sealed so it doesn't leak. The axel itself could possibly be machined and sleeved just in the seal area if you don't have to take off too much. If it's too far gone you'll need a new axel. Just a theory, I have never done this. A machine shop would have to do it anyway. HTH --Mike ------------------ '68 302 2v C4 All stock ragtop

Take a look here, http://www2.vsm.skf.com/usa_english/node920.aspx Just what you need for the damaged axle. I have always used a little (key work here is a LITTLE) silicone sealer on the outside of the axle seals when I install them. Not only does it act as a lube making it easier to install them without damage, but it will seal the outside of the seal to the inside of the housing. This will take care of the nick that you mentioned.

I've never seen these Speedi-Sleeves. Looks like a great fix and no machining required. Thanks, I learned something today. --Mike ------------------ '68 302 2v C4 All stock ragtop

I don’t know what they used to get the old seal out but there was 7 gouges where the metal was pushed up and caused high spots. I ground them down carefully and hit it with some 600 wet-dry to clean it up. Then I used sealer there. It should hold I guess. On the Speedie Sleeve! I have to measure the shaft to see which one to use but by looking at the install diagram I have to make sure I do this very carefully because of the axle shaft being so long. Anybody notice a difference in the 28-spline axles from 67 through 70? I see that the retainer plates are different also. I’ll get some pictures up later!

I would think the guys in the Racing forum could lay this one to rest pretty fast. In my own limited experience, the 9-inch axles I have in my 68 Stang and 68 Cougar are both "necked-down". The only set in my collection that aren't are 31-splines from a pickup.

The top axle I was told was out of a 67-390 Mustang and the lower axle is out of my coupe. It is a 69 rear assembly but the tag layout is like a 70 rear end. Grinder mark? More evidence of someone abusing this thing just to get the bearing off! [This message has been edited by 68 S-code GT (edited 05-20-2006).]
