Hi. I'd like to ask how do I setup my fastback with modern speakers putting it on original mounts. How about the door speakers, I think the area on the door speakers get wet, so do you just mount it there knowing it might short if it gets wet or does it get wet?

That's a good point about door speakers getting wet! I've never bothered to replace the original door speakers in the two cars I've worked on that came with them, 'cos I didn't think it would be worth the effort. They're in such a lousy position for speakers, and way too small. On the same issue ... if your 68 has an uncut trapdoor, in nice condition, I will gladly swap with a beautiful trapdoor I have with twin, new 6x9 speakers and stylish, custom-made metal boxes with deadening rubber lining on the back (in the trunk area).

When I replaced my door speakers I put in some baffles from Crutchfield designed to waterproof them.http://www.crutchfield.com/S-nRh6XtOpUpF/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?search=237XT46&i=237XT46 Item number 237XT46 if the link doesn't work. 8 bucks for the pair.

Well, I can't find the link right now, but I saw where someone was making ABS plastic trap doors with the speaker enclosures built in. I'll try to search for it and see what happens.Ah. Found it on eBay. Looks like CJPony Parts sells it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1967-1970-Mustang-Fastback-Trap-Door-ABS-for-Speakers_W0QQitemZ8066955530QQcategoryZ33705QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem [This message has been edited by gmliebau (edited 05-21-2006).]

I'm sorry I'm planning to keep the fastback as original as possible. So a trap door hole is not one of my option. I'd like to know how I can get the best possible sound using the dash and door speaker holes, or even hide a speaker where it cannot be seen easily. Can I get good sound with only one dash speaker and two small door speakers?

I THINK I still have some of those waterproof speaker baffles. I got some from Crutchfield and ended up not using them. IF I can find them, they are yours for shipping if you want them.

NPD stocks a 60W "Piledriver" Pioneer dual speaker unit that uses the same mount as the original dash unit. I suggest you start with the dash, and then figure out what more you need. If you don't want to buy from the US, take the old dash speaker to Binondo just so they can take the fitting measurements. Somewhere there will fabricate a dual unit for you.

In my opinion, no That's why so many people cut holes in their trapdoors. Maybe you should think about folding down your rear seat, and fabricating a removable speaker box to put on top of it. I believe any shop that handles audio for Civics and Galants can do that for you. Of course, they will try to turn your car into one of those dreadful boom box cars, but if you get involved in the design, you should be able to get it to blend in with the rest of the interior.

What?!? You're not made of money? heheIt 'tis a little pricy for me too. I've decided to build a box for the rear of my '65. I'll remove the fiberglass corners and the trap door and fab up a custom box to fit in there nice and pretty. Throw some vinyl or carpet on it to match the rest of the interior. Should be sweet. I refuse to cut up my trap door like some crazies do.

How about the custom autosound speaker boxes that goes under your seat or somewhere hidden? Are they any good? Has anyone tried one of those?

Mike, I been a passenger in cars with speakers in the weirdest places, including under the seat. It's all a trade-off. Do you really want the bass to be pounding out between your legs? Do you really want the mid-range coming out by your feet? Do you really want the tweeters coming out the bottom of the doors, muffled by the seats? Acoustically, the best place for mid-range and bass is at the back, so anything else will be less than perfect.

That's a good point because I wouldn't want that.
