okay...getting ready to begin work on Trixie....I found a shop near Nashville who has worked with a few friends cars. I got a quote from him and wanted to see what you guys think. He's going to take the engine apart, blast the block and heads so they can be painted and:
Comp custom grind cam--226 int 230 exh, 513 lift int & exh, at 106 deg. lobe seperation
flat top, 4 valve relief pistons (30 over)
bore block 30 over
3 angle valve job
deck block (5-6K off)
timing chain / lifter / spring kit
If I do the reassembly, $1150
If HE does the reassembly, $1500
add $150 to port and polish the heads
add $75 to put in threaded rocker studs
minus $80 to only do a 2 angle valve job
price includes ALL gaskets, bearings, etc.

your opinions???

Those prices sound very reasonable. I paid about the same up here in ohio about 8 years ago.

I suffer a terminal case of While I'm in There. I wouldn't hesistate to spend the extra $220 for the rocker studs and the port and polish. You'll just kick yourself later for not doing it.

I am by no means an expert but, I think with that cam you are going to want the threaded rocker studs

One of the most important things to consider is that you know several people who have used this shop. I can only assume they were satisfied or you wouldn't consider. That goes a long way in making a decision. There a some real hacks out there.

You will want the rocker studs no doubt.
I left mine as press ins with my 270S cam (which is smaller than yours) and I used the recommended springs. I now feel paranoid that they will back out. I would do screw ins. Ford did it for a reason on the Hi-po.

The port and polish is one of those things that depends on the quality of the work and how much he takes off. Is he going to gasket match the intake ports, or just clean out the thermactor bumps and take off the rough edges?

No mention of the crank (turning or polish) or align bore. What about rods resizeing? Just a couple things to concider? I would defently go with the port & polish and the studs. As for assembly, what kind of warranty does the motor come with if he does it? $350.00 for a year or 2 warranty sounds cheap. With my luck on motors everytime I try and save quarters I end up spending dollars. Last thought, the last motor I did the block was "shaked and baked" to clean and they used steel freeze plugs. Well with only 5000 miles on the motor the freeze plugs rusted out and leaked. The water passages where filled with little iron beebees. I was not a happy camper. Just a couple more things to watch out for.

If you are not worried about keeping it origional, you are getting into 5.0 short block money from summit.

Keep all your accesories from the 289 transfere over, have a Ford built short block.

Just another $.02 to think about.
