I have a '60s Ford PS pump with the larger pulley than standard on Mustangs, that the PO adapted to a 390 '68. It works well in the shop just turning right to left, but we haven't had the car on the road yet. What I can't figure out is why the pump (and presumably the fluid too) gets extremely hot very fast. The lines do not seem restricted, and these babies don't contain bearings, so it can't be that. Any ideas? Thanks as always, Simon[This message has been edited by Fastback68 (edited 05-29-2006).]

The fluid does get hot after a while and some high RPM use. I had to install a radiator to keep the fluid at decent temps. It shouldn't get hot idling or at parking lot speed. If it does, it could be either: -Not enough fluid (check hot only, engine off) - the pressure relief valve my be stuck closed in the pump -clogged system (weak PS, heavy steering) -REALLY big tires !

By a process of elimination, I think that pressure relief valve may be the culprit. Now I just have to find the right puller. The pumps with small pulleys are much easier to work on, that's for sure.
