ok, hope someone can point me in the direction of where to start on the one.

68 289 auto, MSD ignition, with an edelbrock carb, 4 barell, maybe a 600cfm, not all that sure.

Was driving along fine and it when I started slowing down I was losing power, then it would come back then lose it (at idle) again, go to the show, had a look uder the hood: the left mixture screw made no difference to the running, right worked as expected and there was a sound of like intermittant metal clicks (most of us thought it was fluid). Float tanks were fine. We could get it so it would run at about 3000rpm at idle, but with a lot of hesitation, cruising was fine and on the way home, pulled in to find the coil had died (boiling away it oil) and replaced it, but that made no difference.

Drove home with it fine at cruising speed, but slowing down, or ideling I'd keep getting "bursts" of power, and then nothing.

Any ideas

I would lean towards a carb problem, since you said adjusting one needle made no difference. I think there is some junk in your primary circuits.

I would remove the carb (so little parts don't get lost down the engine). Then remove the top of the carb and use a can of aerosol carb cleaner with a squirt tube on it to flush out the little passages. Maybe even remove the idle misture needles and blast some cleaner thru there.

Make sure you wear safety glasses - that carb cleaner can backfire out of those little holes.

Thanks very much, I'll take the carb off, clean it out and let you know how I get on, probably take a few days to get around to it.

Think I may have found the problem, haven't tested it yet. Took the carb apart and found a piece of silicone lodged in the pipework for the left jet. I seems to be from the cap that was covering on of the vacuum ports. There was a lot of general gunk in the carb too as the last owner put in the fuel filter backwards!!
Let ye all know for definate whn I fire it up over the weekend

DOH! Sometimes I wonder how Mustangs have managed to last as long as they have with all the stupid things previous owners have done.

Inexperience can NOT be compared to plain stupidity Richard. You are still learning, some people need taken out at birth just to be done with them.
