Gotta love being kicked while you are down...

I let my visiting from out of town cousins borrow the Festiva tonight figuring I could take the '65 to work the rest of the week. Well I remembered that she wasnt shifting into higher gears correctly so pulled the vacuum modulator line to find tranny fluid in it. So I got a replacement and when I pulled the old one tranny fluid gushed all over and wouldnt stop flowing until I put the replacement in. Something tells me this is a bad thing as I have done a bunch of vacuum modulators (even in the '65) and have never had this happen before lol. So whats up with this?

After getting the mess cleaned up I warmed her up to check the tranny fluid. It was of course low but got enough in her until I could get her totally warm. Problem is I have to rev way high to get into first gear (it is a green dot and doesnt matter which one I put it in). Reverse is working great. Of course now I remember that the last time I drove her I noticed that the tranny was flashing up (it had been a while, I drove her the day before Andrea got in the accident so I totally spaced on this problem).

So any clue on what is going on? Anything I can try? I have a good v8 C4 out of a '66 sitting out back but I think I would have to change input shaft, etc to use it.

Thanks all.

Sounds like the forward clutch is gone.

Did you by any chance loose/drop that little pushrod thing that goes in the end of the modulator? That will give you low system pressure and cause what you're discribing. ????

Did you have the car raised up in the front only? I assume so as the check pin fell out.
Raise the car level, remove the modulator and check pin.
Get a magnet and see if you can fish out the modulator control valve. It is about 2.5 inches long.
Re-install the valve as far as it will go.
Instert the check pin INTO the modulator then re-install it.
Warm up hot and top off fluid.

So if I got this right when taking out the old vacuum modulator the modulator control valve fell into the pan thus allowing the fluid to gush and the no forward gears?

The check pin came out with the old vacuum modulator and was installed in the new one.

Thanks Alex, I'll try that tonight!
