My autolite 4100 was running rich(fumes burning my eyes & fume smell in my clothes after driving) and needed a rebuild, so i swaped it out for a edelbrock 1403 500cfm. I thought this would fix the fume prob, but i'm still getting the fumy smell while driving. I thought switching carbs would have done the trick. I got the carb put on in the SF Bay Area and drove home sill fumey. When I got home I asked a local Mustang Repair shop if they could very precisely and FINELY tune the carb more toward the lean side and away from the rich side. The guy told me that I purchased the Wrong carb for my car, that I should have purchased a Holley & that he couldn't tune the Edelbrock 1403. A very popular Mustang shop in the Bay put it on for me How could it be the wrong carb for my car? Should I persist in trying to find some one to tune the carb or should I buy a Holley like the Mustang mechanic near my house said? This is another one of these crazy things that I feel only happens to Me Any advice or opinions will really help, thanks M&M ------------------ '66 Vert, 289, 3speed, w/procars. He's full of crap! Did he just so happen to sell Holley's too, by the way??? You can go the the Zone and get a rod and jet kit for 75 bucks, and tune it any way you want. You can also set the screws out front with a vacuum guage, and it should help some too. You positive it's gas and not exhaust???------------------ William The easiest way to find something lost, is to buy a replacement. 68 Coupe 289 C4 3:55's/Trac-Lok

I would also check your exhaust system for a leak/leaks. Shouldn't be getting exhaust smells in your car. The 500cfm carb is probably just right for the 289. Just a matter of tweaking eveything, mainly carb and timming.Dave & Terri ------------------ '65 Mustang Fastback '66 Mustang Coupe '02 Explorer XLT Common sense isn't common anymore.

I went to a recommened carb repair/rebuild shop yesterday. I wanted to have them Finely tune the carb. They referred me to two dyno shops and recommended I take the car to them so they could use thier "Sniffers" to detect the fume levels. A carb shop that had "Sniffers" is originaly how the 4100 got diagnosed, so I think this may be good advice--I always have been curious to know what my stock, basline is before I start adding HP upgrades. What do you guys think, is the dyno pull the best step to ID the fume levels in order to correct it.

Like Dave said, also check PVC / breather cap operation for fumes etc and where they can enter the cabin (eg: split shifter boot etc.) I would imagine the engine would have to be running mighty rich for petrol fumes to enter the car ..... ------------------ 1966 fastback - 4v 289 - T10 4 speed - Pony interior JWW_289 Home Page

By the way, every Mustang has a short list of things that only happen to it.

Thank you all for your advice, but in this instance Dave you were the man w/the golden plan! It was exhaust fumes I was mainly smelling. The shop that welded on my Magnaflow mufflers did not make sure thier welds were leak-proof. A muffler shop nearby duplicated the muffler install welds and that did the trick. Thank you all soo much.------------------ '66 Vert, 289, 3speed, w/procars. A removable 14in grant steering wheel. Granada disk break swap. 15x7&15x8 steel styles w/225-60-15's. Hey Scott. Some other folks have asked that same ? For now anyway, my plan is to let Ponycarbs rebuild the 4100 and hold on to it. But if I change that plan I'll definately shoot you an email Scott. Thanks.[This message has been edited by 66drop (edited 06-02-2006).]

66Drop, I would sugest you do a search on Pony Carbs on this forum and at the Ford Carb forum:http://www.network54.com/Forum/88781/ After reading some posts, make your decision on sending your carb there. I would prefer to rebuild it myself or have a local carb shop do it. The guy that rebuilds it ought to tune it. JMHO. If you decide to do it yourself buy a Motorcraft brand kit. It will have the best instructions to do it properly. The Autolite carbs are simple compared to a Holly or some others and work great when set up properly. Glad you got her fixed for now. --Mike
