I want to put a/c in my 68. I have access to an original in dash unit for a decent price, but had planned on putting in a new unit. For a non-show car ocassional driver, would it be better to just throw in the original a/c or fork out the cash for an aftermarket unit?

will the after market use the new stuff or the old cooling stuff? I would go with the new stuff if I could. Just easier to maintain. Gaurantee, support, looks new, etc. The old stuff is cool but for a non original show car make the car better than it was.

It sounds like the original setup is cheaper for you than aftermarket. In that case, if the original is in good condition and complete, I'd grab it! Such setups go for several hundred dollars, and they work just fine. But if you go that route, be sure to pop open the evaporator box. They're prone to debilitaing rust, and cracking.

Simon, original is everything except the control panel, registers (which I already had) and the plastic plenum from the air handler to the defrost ducts.

Just wondering if the old unit is worth the headache of making sure everything works and tracking down some R-12 to charge it with.

I've gone through one of these before that was just the underdash pieces and it was as you described, fiberglass box was busted up and all the metal pieces rusted. This one is pristine.

If I were you, I'd go with the original setup, toss in a new heater core and evaporator and gaskets, and then get a Sanden rotary compressor conversion kit, which will allow you to run R134A, and makes for a far more reliable and efficient and smoother operation. If you have any tech concerns, just call Classic Auto Air direct 813-251-2356.
