Hi.. I'm converting a 65 from 6 cylinder to V8. I've replaced the lower control arms with new ones from NPD, gotten a complete tie rod assembly for a 66 manual drum brake car, and have spindles and drums from, I believe, a 69 car. The problem I'm having is even with the tie rod ends adjusted all the way in, the front tires are not straight. Looking from the front of the car, the tires are pointing in at least an inch. I'm not sure what the problem is, can somebody fill me in? Thanks, Mike

Have you compared the position of the arm that receives the tie rod ends between the '69 and the '65 spindles? Since you are mixing and matching parts you'll need to probably figure the size tie rods you'll need.

My suggestion: I'd disconnect the tie rods, adjust the tires to your approximate toe-in, then overlap the tie rod ends and calculate a 1" gap between the two ends {which they seem to be designed with from what I've seen} and that will give you the lengths you'll need the tie rods to be. Pay attention to how close any adjusting sleeves and their clamps and bolts get to any frame or other components turning turning and suspension travel, of course. You can put those sleeves anywhere as long as there's no conflict. That's what I'd do.

Or you could just locate '65 drum spindles.

I ran into this same problem last summer. The car had early 70s maverick front spindles and I had to cut about an 1/2-3/4 of an inch off of the adjusting sleeves to allow me to screw the inner and outer tie rods in till they almost touched inside the sleeve. The later spindles also take a bigger tie rod end.

Does the center link have the same distances between the tie-rod mounting holes?

Thanks for all the info, guys. I just dropped in the new engine and trans this past saturday, and for some reason the wheels are now pointed straight. I don't know, I guess I'll just trailer it to the alignment shop and let those guys handle it....Thanks again..

Didn’t realize you didn’t have any weight on the front end. With the change in the front end height the geometry changes.
