I recently purchased a 65 fastback and the engine (including the valve covers) are blue and air cleaner is black. It is an original car in every respect, and the owner (second owner by the way) insists that they are original and came that way from Ford. The engine tag is also blue and identifies the engine production date as July 1964. The car was assembled in September 1964, so the engine was built before the car. I've read that the engine is supposed to be black and valve covers/air cleaner are gold. Has anyone heard of any exceptions?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Welcome to M&M. A good spot to get info.

The original 351W in my '69 came as all blue.

The only gold valve covers I remember were on the 289 225 & 271HiPo.

Could be wrong, won't be the first time. Others will be along to give beter info.

The easiest way to find something lost, is to buy a replacement.

Mike,
Yes, the 1965 engines should have a gold air cleaner and valve covers. The block should be painted black. But, you know there is always a but. It is possible you have a '65 built near the end of the 1965 production run. It is possible that a '66 production run engine was put in your car instead. It is also possible that the engine was changed at some point in the cars life. So much can happen over the years and you never know what a previous owner may have done.

As he said, it was built Sept., 1964. Black would be the color with the gold valve covers. Have also read aboutsome LATE 65's painted blue. In that case, for me, would still go black on the 65, as there are judges who would want documentation, etc.

Like the car that Bob Perkins has(had....He had a 66 that was so early that it had black 65 seats. Judges gigged the guy, who sold it to Perkins, when he took it to an MCA show.

Mike,
Your second owner is giving you hearsay evidence at best. He wasn't there when the factory built it, so anything is really possible.

In 1964 Ford was painting 289 4 barrel engines black with gold valve covers and the air cleaner would have a gold top as well.
289 HiPo would have chrome air cleaner and valve covers, but still with black block.

Looking just like a 289, but with a 2 barrel carb, the 260 engine would be black with light blue valve covers and air cleaner.

Engine blocks were not blue until the 66 model year, a full year after your engine date code.

And by the way, the engine tag wasn't painted by Ford, so someone has done some playing around with paint under the hood.
