Didn't really know where to post this, so I'll try here
A few days ago, I was talking with a friend about cleaning up my engine compartment and we got to the subject of spark plug wires how they criss-cross and don't look "neat"....he goes into his cabinets and pulls out this distributer cap, new, but with no box...it's got a tape around it (with Ford written on it) with the firing order numbers printed on it. It's supposed to work like a GM cap, the wires come out "in order"...cylinders 1-2-3-4 go to one side of the cap, cylinders 5-6-7-8 go to the other side...all the "cris-cross" is wired into the cap....
anyone ever seen one of these:

the wording on the bottom pic says, "center line motor"
THANKS !

The firing order is determined by the valve timing, NOT the cap. The distributor spins counter-clockwise; the cap dosen't care how it's oriented as long as the sequence and timing are correct.

Looking at your pics, the firing order is early Windsor correct: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. You can stab the distributor any way you like as long as you time it properly

I think what V8 Thumper was trying to say is that its just a cap, it happens to have the windsor sequence printed on it (which will not work on 289/302 but will work with later 5.0 HO).
If you really want to clean the wiring up a bit, buy yourself a wide cap (should be avaliable from most auto parts stores, and you will have more room to route the wires). I think the last time I bought one I ordered a cap for an 84 Mustang 5.0. The cap is wider and you will need a longer rotor to go with it. Get yourself a set of 'custom' length spark plugs wires (make sure the come with the HEI boots) and two sets of seperators. Just get the first separator as close to the dist cap as you can then the next one goes right before the spark plug. Let the wire for that spark plug just hang then attach the next seperator. Its really hard trying to explain what I mean so I attached a picture. Hopefully you can see what Im trying to show you... http://home.comcast.net/~lilmetzican/02higher_view.jpg ...David F.

on edit= pic too big, just click on link. Thats a windsor by the way...
