Is it a 64 1/2 or a 65. It has mostly 65 things on it the mustang is 5 in long. The gas tank cover is 64 but it has the wire connecting it to the car. Please help . I am confused because from what I've read production stopped aug 17, 1964 and when they restarted they were called 65 and before they were 64 1/2.
Thanks
Amy

Hey Amy,
The quickest way to make this determination is to look at the fifth digit of the vin if it is D,F,or U It's a 64 1/2.If it's A,C,or T it's a 65 .These are assuming it's not a "k" Which I'm assuming it's not. They were pretty cut and dry.It was common for alot of early 65's to have 64 1/2 Items because Ford used up it's excess stock on the assmebly line.

No Prob. We're here to help. That's usually the quickest way to tell.I have seen some rare oddball exceptions like an A Code coupe that was built within the dates to be considered a 64 1/2.Yet it had the A in the vin? Feel free to fire away with any questions.I'm always glad to discuss Mustang trivia.

To get absolutely technical, if the first digit in the vin is a 5, its a 1965 in Ford's eyes.
Ford as a corporation never made a 64 1/2, its only us hobbyists and the entire rest of the free world that make the distinction between the early 65's and the late 65's during their 18 month production run.
