Is the voltage regulator for 65 with the gauages different than the regulator for one with the idoit lights? The wiring diagram shows there is a fourth line from the regulator to the stator whereas my car (with gauges) only has 3 lines (+, - and field). I am under the understanding that that the later transitorized regulators (i.e. for a 78) work and that is what I am using. BUT I only get about .3 volts at the wire to the field post. Is this enough? The alternator has been bench tested by 3 shops and they all say it is okay. I have swapped in a new VR and still no difference. The hot wires to the regulator (ignition & battery) have 12 volts. So what's the problem?

Thanks,
Don

0.3 volts to the field sounds low, but if the regulator's function is to provide a ground path for the field coils, then it is working (0.3 volts is just a small voltage drop to ground). Does the field wire always have 0.3 volts on it? Field should be getting turned on and off by the regulator so I would expect two states at the field wire...0.3 volts and something else such as 12.0 volts. I bought an electronic regulator for my '65 a few months ago and it has 3 posts. I got it from NPD or some other vendor. It works way better than the old one.

No I never see anything other than the 0.3 volts. Hmm maybe the new regulator is also bad or the eltronic ones I'm getting don't work with only 3 posts.
