I'm considering buying a 65 mustang for sale locally for a daily driver. It has an I-6 which is good for a daily driver nice with gas prices the way they are. However, my plan is to drive it to the engine goes out then replace it with a new crate V-8 or find a 289. So my question is, what will it take to make the conversion. Suspension? Rear End? 4 lug to 5 lug conversion? Would it be better to just pay the extra cash now for a V-8 mustang?

You'll give out before that inline 6 does! Those are some pretty long-lived motors.

The inline six can be seriously beefed up as well. The motor is a seven bearing crank. It can take some serious punishment. There is a site, fordsix.com that can give you lots of info on that. If it is a daily driver keep the six. Hop it up some and enjoy.

I'd get it if you have the room. You could drive it during these gas rages, and when they settle at 5 bucks a gallon, you'll probably be happy it is a 6 cylinder. JMO------------------ William M&M# 4256 MCA# 64831 68 Coupe 289 C4 3:55's/Trac-Lok

Yeah, 5 bucks a gallon is realistic. The I-6 is the ticket for me. I've still got the 351W for fun. Thanks all!

Swaping out a 6 cyl for a v8 (should of had a V8!) is no small task. Changing the motor and drive train is one thing, but upgrading suspension and other items can get involved and expensive. For example, you'll want to upgrade brakes for the heavier motor and to stop quicker...since you'll be accelerating faster! :-)Your better off finding an original V8 car fi that's where you want to end up. Then again, the conversion can be fun! Did that swap on my 65 about 2 years ago. Wasn't that bad. I was short on funds so alot of fabricating was done in terms off putting the 5 speed behind it. But otherwise it was well worth it.. Now I do agree with the others in the fact that buying a V8 car would have been much easier as far as cheap goes--- I did the swap with a bunch of junkyard searches and was able to save some money on some major components.

gas milage still isnt that great with an inline six. Once I started doing quite a bit more highway driving that 3 speed killed me. mpg decreased and i think actual numbers were 17-20 mpg.------------------ 06 Chebby cobalt SS 88 thunderbird TC 2.3L Gillis at 18 psi, walbro fuel pump, Kirban afpr, 3.73 8.8" rear, rebuilt head, Ranger roller, .48/.60 T3 with clipped wheel, ported elbow, 3 in exhuast, FMIC 66 mustang V8 swap baby 68 Fairlane 289 w/ auto rusting away motor is going in the mustang
