So the other day I decide to fill up my gas tank as prices are a little lower. I pop in $30 bucks and pay at the pump. I then notice that I have a good gas smell and that the trunk is leaking gas. Open the trunk up and sure enough it appears that the spout/neck where the rubber is, is leaking.

I figure that I could just get a new rubber piece and replace it but the tank kit from MustangsPlus is less than $200 and the tank is 40 years old.

Time to replace it when I get a chance I think?

If I do replace the whole kit I have read that I can put in a bigger tank from a different year mustang. Has anyone done this?

Richard.

Richard, this is from the NPD catalog: "It is possible to fit a 69/70 tank into the 65 thru 68's, you will need to modify the filler neck and hose, and use the proper sending unit for that tank". Hope this helps.

I would recommend a new tank though. Its a cheap investment in your fuel system.

My old tank was full of gunk and rust and would plug a filter in a few hundred miles. Some folks take them to a place that will clean them out and put sealer in them, but why bother when a new tank costs about the same and then you get a drain plug in it! The drain plugs are neat if you ever want to install fuel injection and a return line.

Thanks for the info guys. I will check out MustangsPlus and see what the kit cost for a '69 tank.

Has anyone done the '69 tank into a '66 mustang swap here?

How hard it is to modify the neck?

Richard.

I had mentioned earlier about por15 a gas tank. I just talked to the owner of the bus
and he pulled the tank for a sendor replacemnt. Tank was coated about 5 years
ago. He said it still looks like it was just
done.

I have a 69 tank in my 68 fastback and just put a 70 tank in my 68 coupe.

I had to bend the inlet in the tank back a bit plus I cut about an inch off the filler neck. The 70 neck might work the best for you since the 65, 66 & 70 have a flat rear panel.

No, since it was new but I did use the POR 15 sealer kit for the inside.

I think any undercoating would be overspray or something dealer installed for additional cost. These cars were built fast nad cheaply to put a profit on the bottom line. Even Iacocca said that they weren't built with longetivity in mind. He said he was surprised some many had survived.

As for paint- I personally wouldn't do black because it would just soak up the heat from the pavement in the summer. There is no benefit to that. Charlie

I think I am going to do a flat black or a gloss black that matches the nice new leaf springs that are under the car and/or maybe a flat black so it looks good in the trunk. Or maybe gloss on the bottom and flat on the top.

Richard.

I put a 69 tank in my 66 GT 350. I used the filler neck out of a 70 coupe parts car I had. Every thing lined up and worked perfectly without modifing it. Now I still have the original incase I restore the car someday.
