What sort of miles to the gallon should I be expecting from a 68 coupe 289 automatic, MSD ignition, city or openroad driving.

I went for a drive the other day with a friend with a 351 electronic ignition, manual 4 speed and he used about a fifthe less fuel, would this be right?

thanks

I have always heard that a manual will get better fuel mileage than a slushbox.

It depends on the amount of modification, and how it is set up. A stock 289/ 2 bbl should get at least 20mpg/ hwy. My 67 w/289, headers, torker manifold, Edelbrock carb, only gets 12/15 mpg. I could probably increase that by tweaking the carb. Years ago, I had a 67 GT/ 390, 4 sp, 391 gears, all souped up that got 16 mpg! I'm not sure how much the crappy gas we have today contributes to the poor milage, I suspect it does though.

A big part of it is who kept their foot out of the gas the most. Hard acceleration and higher RPMs will kill your gas mileage. Gears is a big part of it too.

If you have a 4 barrel and you open up the secondaries, I will use my one of my grandad's analogies "It's like flushing a toilet."

On the interstate with a 3.70 gear my fastback got 13-14mpg on the way to Bristol. Keep in mind that I did not get on it at all. I kept the RPMs as low as I could and took it easy on the car.
I do not even calculate the MPG in the city!!

Dont forget a US gallon is 3.8 Liters
a UK gallon is 4.4 liters

I had a 289 with an automatic, stock rear gears cruise at about 20-22mpg (US gallons). A manual might get 2-3 mpg more.

The difference between auto and manual on new cars is much less because the modern Automatics have a lockup torque converter - but these old autos dont lockup so they use more gas.

When cold it would get 13-14mpg (US)
In city traffic it would get something in between probably about 18-20 depending on how heavy the traffic was.

Now I put stroked it to 331 ci, and added more cam, its not as good, but it still cruises at about 18-20.

Fuel mixture in the carb is HUGE factor in determining mpg. as are the rear gears (as mentioned), im still at about 3.00:1 gears

My 65FB with tired old 302, Holley 600, Weiand High Rise, Tri-Y headers, Flowmasters, 3.00:1 rear runs 12-14MPG when I can keep my foot out of it. Highway runs at about 3100-3200RPM at about 75MPH.
Pour a wee bit of Tullamore Dew or Jameson's in her & she'd run better I'd bet...

With the old 3.40 gears I was getting 16-18 on the highway and 14-16 city. With the 3.80 gears and my HEAVY foot I now get 12-14 highway and 10-12 city. There have been times I can watch the gas gauge move. thats DPM dollars per mile then

With my old 67 C-code (2BBL) and auto with 2.79 rear and stock everything, I would get around 16-18 around town (assuming it wasn't too cold out so the choke cut out earlier) and between 18-22 on the highway. I once got 25MPG on the highway when I was in an economy funk, but that was only once.

In my current 66 coupe with Autolite 4100 4BBL carbed 5.0L HO, dual exhausts, 3.00:1 gears (soon to be 3.40) and Z-spec T5, I've been getting around 20-22 in performance-oriented mixed driving (40/60 city/highway). That's in the summer and the car is well tuned. City driving will be closer to 15-18 and highway trips will be closer to 25-28MPG, if I put a tennis ball under the accelerator.

I think a good tune, working choke and accelerator pump, and appropriate jets in the carburetor will do wonders to the mileage. But these aren't meant to be economy cars.

You need to know the rear end gear ratios too.

Used to regularly get 22+ in the Mach I with 3.00 gears and a rational foot.

I have a mild build 289 with a Holley 4bbl. I also have 3.55 rear gears and a 4 speed trans, I can get about 14-16mpg. I'd really like to install a t-5 and see 20+

See specs in my sig. I only got 500 miles on it before I burned a piston so it is down now. I never really got it on the freeway for more that about 10 miles. For that 500 miles the secondaries were open every time I got a chance (that's what I built it for). 10MPG. I guess I'm saying that you should expect to get better than 10MPG.
