Well lets see I have 68 coupe with a 289 and where i live the roads in my area are really steep and on the one road as i climb it sometimes sounds like its about to brake a clunk clunk i think the engine is starving for fuel on this steep hill but i'm not sure. I have checked everything else tranny rear nothing is wrong that i can see any ideas?

Welcome to M&M !
I'm not quite familiar with your terminology so could you please clarify "brake a clunk, clunk" and I'll try to help.

Does it sound like rocks in a coffee can? If so, that is detonation and either your octane is too low or timing is too advanced.

Have you checked your float level? Sounds like it's too far advanced also, but how does it act from a dead stop when you get on it hard? You might hook it up to the light and see what the timing is set at, post it here, and I'm sure we can figure this out for ya. Welcome to M&M .

When you're going up that hill your engine has a pretty good strain on it. The noise it's making is telling you it wants:
1) more octane
2) less timing advance
3) less foot on the 'go' pedal

or a combination of the above.
The fuel and air mixture is exploding inside your cylinders, potentially damaging your pistons. You want the mixture to burn quickly and evenly without exploding.

If I'm correct by the handle/username that would be a 1968 Gold Nugget Special.
