I have a 302 with the casting numbers pointing to it being a 85 vintage block.
I noticed the firing order is different
from the one cast into my 289 intake that
I plan on dropping off to the machine shop
soon. I don't know what cam is in the 302
as it came with the car when I bought it.
I have a receipt to back up the rebuild, but
it does not have what cam they used. I tried
to find out from the shop if they have any records and everything they had burned up
in a fire a couple years ago.
Does the cam control what the firing order is or is the 85' 302 order not the same as the 65' 289?

302 firing order should be the same as a 289.

If the cam has been changed to a 351 cam it will have a different order.

1 3 7 2 5 6 4 8 for the 351

instead of 1 5 4 2 6 37 8 for the 289.

My 289 has a Ford Motorsport 351 cam in it so it has the 1 3 7 2 5 6 4 8 order.

Check the wires out against those orders and you will find out.

What direction does the distributer turn?
Clockwise or CCW?

Ford V8 distributors rotate counterclockwise. As for firing orders, starting in 1982, the 302 "H.O." Mustang GT engine used a 351W "marine" camshaft, and the 351`s firing order. All the following 5.0 H.O. engines retained the 351 firing order, while the low performance 302`s used the standard 15426378 firing order.

To answer your question tho
the cam DOES decide the firing order
If you dont know what vintage cam you have then you can simply turn the engine over (CW from the front of the crank) with a wrench and watch which valves operate. When you get Valve #1 to open, start there and follow the order - that will be your firing order.

make sure you know your cylinder numbers - I often get confused.

First thanks for all the wisdom. It turns out that I have the 351 firing order. Is their anyway to tell the difference between
a HO block and regular 302 block or are the
castings the same?

85 HO block would be a roller cam block but I beleive all the 85 and up blocks have provisions for roller cams. There is no differeence between block castings though. Does your motor have roller lifters?
