260 2v Symptoms: 1. Engine runs, but very rough. 2. Dies when put in gear. 3. Timing light rpms very sporatic, inconsistent. Here is what we've done: 1. Distributor timed top dead center No. 1. 2. New coil. 3. New rebuilt 2100 carb from Pony Carbs, getting gas. 4. New wires, cap, plugs. 5. Vacuum advance is presently disabled. 6. No vacuum leaks. 7. New fuel pump. Thanks! J.

Joyce, wait for the real experts to come along but until then here are a few thoughts.Re-stab the distributor Bad carb (have had them bad new in the box) Firing order wrong Vacuum leak (could be well hidden, try propane around carb and base, be careful) Bad valve Points Rotor Cap Bad coil ( same as carb) I know these are just the basics but I have found a lot of times that that is usually where you find the problem. I know Mike is an expert so that is why I am a bit stumped that he has not found the problem. If you have some other parts kicking around (after seeing your place I know you do )I would start replacing all your ignition parts, carb and check firing order to eliminate all of these. It could also be a combination of a couple of things working together to cause you these problems. Take the parts you are going to change off of one of your cars that is running good and begin the process. I know Mike & Mikal will figure it out and soon have you rolling. Good luck and keep us posted ------------------ JOHN 65 FASTBACK 2+2...14.44 @ 107 MPH 87 TAURUS WAGON 03 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4 SHORT BOX Member: PACIFIC COAST MUSTANG ASSOCIATION Member:Vancouver Island Mustang Association M&M #1710 65 FASTBACK 2003 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4

I find that rough idle is usually an ignition problem. And the fact that you have a Pony carb on there - usually perfect makes me think its ignition.Points can be devils to set up. Is the roughness just sputtering or is there an even misfire in there? Johns hit the highlights. Have you tried adjusting the timing to smooth out the idle? You can pull plugs one at a time to see if they affect the roughness - if you pull a plug lead and nothing changes you know that cylinder isnt doing anything and that will help you

I know you guys aren't rookies but I would check to make sure the disty is not 180 out.Just reverify. Late nights and pressure can lead to silly mistakes. My other thought is to try a new coil wire. They can be bad out of box. Lastly verify engine ground is good. Good luck!

Erratic timing could be a worn timing chain and/or gears. A quick check is to pop the dist cap, put a big socket on the harmonic balancer bolt and manually rotate the engine until you see the dist. rotor move. Make a note of the position of the pully and then rotate it the opposite way while watching the rotor. Stop as soon as you see it move again. Look at the pulley to see how many degrees of rotation you have. This indicates how much slop is in the timing chain. As I recall 15-20 degrees is alright but over that may indicate trouble. This is not a real accurate method, the only way to know for sure is to pull the front cover and inspect the chain. ------------------ '68 302 2v C4 All stock ragtop

.........had another thought Joyce, if this is the engine in "Indy" then if I remember correctly with it being a very early car you have a generator in it. Check to see that it is giving you the voltage output you need, this could also cause your problems ------------------ JOHN 65 FASTBACK 2+2...14.44 @ 107 MPH 87 TAURUS WAGON 03 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4 SHORT BOX Member: PACIFIC COAST MUSTANG ASSOCIATION Member:Vancouver Island Mustang Association M&M #1710 65 FASTBACK 2003 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4

What was done to the engine between the time that it ran well and then started these problems? Or did it just start to occur?Since you made this statement... "1. Distributor timed top dead center No. 1. " ...Are you saying that timing was set to Top Dead Center? It should be about 6 - 10 degrees Before Top Dead Center with the vacuum advance unplugged and the hose blocked off.
