I know this topic has been talked about a lot, but I need more specific help. I want to upgrade to a one wire alternator because the one I have now is bad and I would rather get a one wire alt. I have a after market stereo and plan on putting an amp in to run one woofer and a HEI ignition. How many amp alternator should I get and what one? I don't need chrome or anything like that, I just want something that will fit. I can look at the summit and jegs pages, but I need to know what one will bolt into my car like year and model I should order for. ThanksAlex

I saw this one at Summitt: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=PWM%2D8%2D47100&view=32&N=700+400345+4294880793+4294908331+0 but it is not for the V belt setup I have. Am I supposed to switch the pullies out my self or am I looking in the wrong place?

Hi Alex. You could use a GM alternator. GM alts have an integrated voltage regulator so the one on your car can be removed. Check with a reputable repair shop. They will steer you in the right direction. Good luck, Rino

Doesn't Powermaster make a 1 wire alternator??? If you're going to have a stereo amp, I would go with a minimum off 100 amp, maybe even go with a 130, but you gotta hope these old wires can carry the load. JMO

Both Summit and Jegs sell one wire alternators for Fords that use a V-belt pulley. Here is the one I used on my 1963 Ranchero (orginally a 260 V8 but I swapped a 302 in it). http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D810302&N=700+4294925143+4294839060+4294880793+4294908331+4294924702+4294908395+115&autoview=sku

Just a shot, but try a search on HEI distributors or one wire alternators even, see what you can find. I've found some very interesting stuff doing a search, so ya never know.------------------ William M&M# 4256 MCA# 64831 68 Coupe 289 C4 3:55's/Trac-Lok

I have a Ford 3G alt from a 95 Taurus, 130 Amp. Not all 3G's drop right in, but alot of them do. Here's a pic on my car: My alt was pulled from a junkyard car and had the serpentine pulley. I swapped on the dual V-pulley seen in the pic. It can be sourced here: http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=67 In fact, that site has everything you need to swap in a 3G (you sure don't want no danged Cheby parts on your Ford!!). I use a 100amp proform alternator. All new internals gm style with internal reg (about $90 from summit). I bought a spacer and cut to fit. Use a 8 gauge wire straight to the battery. Powermaster is good too but you'll pay nearly double.

I use a 14o amp powermaster single wire on a 351W in a 68 GT Convert. It bolted right in. You can call powermaster and they will tell you exactly which one to purchase for your belt setup.Good Luck!
