I have an after market stereo with power amps for speakers and subs in my 67 fastback. The amps are drawing power when everything is off. Even if I disconect everything from the amps and just leave the power lead and as soon as I hook up the ground it draws power. I had the amps bench tested and the store said they were fine. Any ideas? All electrical works on the car but lights to dim some when RPMs drop.

It depends on how you have it hooked up. If the amp really is fine then it must be your connection point. It is tuff with these older cars.I went around this problem by running a lead directly to the battery. The only negative was that you could leave it on accidentally but that never happened. quote: Originally posted by rexbd: I have an after market stereo with power amps for speakers and subs in my 67 fastback. sounds to me like it's just hooked up to a constant power source and not switched.------------------ "Be yourself everyone else is taken" http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/adragon8u.html

I have an aftermarket radio in my 67. The new radios still require power when the engine is off to keep the radio memory alive. This will cause a small spark at the battery when you reconnect the battery. The current drain is very small and doesn't hurt the battery. Another possibe problem...the alternator. What size alternator do you have? It might not be able to supply enough current to support the engine and the stereo/amp together. You may need to put a larger alternator on. Hope this helps!JimBob ------------------ 67 Coupe, Father bought new, Ford Racing 5.0L Crate motor (E303cam/X303heads) GT-40 EFI, Cobra Electronics, Tremec 5 speed. I guess I misread the problem. Is the amp just drawing power constantly or is it like a short? Also, when you say amp, are you referring to the stereo itself or a seperate amp that's hooked up to the stereo?------------------ "Be yourself everyone else is taken" http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/adragon8u.html

Forgot to mention "Subs"...even newer cars require large capacitors to "keep current available to run subs and not affect the rest of the car."JimBob ------------------ 67 Coupe, Father bought new, Ford Racing 5.0L Crate motor (E303cam/X303heads) GT-40 EFI, Cobra Electronics, Tremec 5 speed.
