Caught a rock, need a new windshield. I've run a search but haven't learned much. There's plenty of talk about replacements being thinner, but nothing about a real replacement. Is there no proper replacement? Am I stuck with the thin replacement?

My experience is that replacements are lighter because of advances in material technology, not because they're thinner. In fact, I've found them to be the exact same width. But then of course this will depend on your supplier.

I had to have two replaced, one for rocks and the other vandalism. Both sealed up just fine and other than the little logo in the bottom that did not say "Carlite," I couldn't tell you what the difference was.

Maybe check with CJ Pony Parts & see what they offer. I think they have a "stock" thickness windshield last time I checked.

I have an aftermarket one. No problems the main thing to ask yourself is do you want that green or blue sunshade across the top? I wanted to keep a more stock look so I opted for a no sunshade. It comes with a very slight greenish tint from the glass itself but it considered to be "untinted" and matches the rest of the glass.------------------

I had a lot of trouble finding a replacement clear windshield with no sunshade at the top.

Maybe my experience can be transferred over to the US. Whenever I've ordered windshields, I haven't had any joy with Ford auto supplies, but a couple of specialist windshield companies that have been in the business for years. Between them, they have the molds of just about every 60s and 70s American car you can imagine. When I went to get one for my 72 Torino, they just hauled the mold off the top shelf, dusted it down and got to work. All windshields come standard without any tint. Tint is extra, and you can add your own logo if you want. Maybe such outfits exist over there?

Call some local places outta the Yellow pages, you might find something local. I would want someone to install it anyway, just in case it leaks, which is highly possible from what I've heard.

Thanks guys. It looks like you all have had good luck with the replacements. Makes me feel better about this. Not sure yet if I will go with any tint or shade. Neither really matter. I do like to keep the car looking stock though. Its got 45k on the ticker now and things like this are bound to happen. My brother says it gives the car character but its right in my line of sight.Plan to have the car painted this winter so that is when I will get it replaced.

The local Mustang Putz charges out this world for "Carlite" logo w/shields. Knew he was getting repops cheap, somewhere.... so I DID use the Yellow Pages. First call, a co. called Sunshine Glass. Got a 66 w/s with Carlite, tint at top, delivered to my door THE NEXT DAY for the princely sum of 128.40 It fit perfect and my glass guy installed it with 3M bedding goop, etc. and no prob, no leaks. He was blown away at the price so I put him on to them. Did a few myself-cvs are easier 'cause you can stand up and "spank" the window with palm while pulling sash cord to lap the rubber over the flange... but this guy puts bedding compound on the flange, between the w/ strip and the opening, and between the glass and the w/strip. Nothing like having a pro do a specialty deal. [This message has been edited by mellowyellow (edited 10-18-2006).]

That’s how I do mine. I only had one leak so far and that was because the tube of 3M turned out to be old and didn’t flow out a smooth as it should have. I think the stuff only has a life of 6 month from when it’s made.I had to get a new back window for my F150 and called Diamond Auto Glass. They actually had the Carlite glass for my truck and I had it installed for half of what Ford wanted for just the glass.

What do you guys use to seal windows? The local mustang shop sold me the 3M sealer in the can, but he said that you can't get it anymore.

That's what I use. I usually get it at a local paint supply place, but I know NPD and some others carry it too. About 7-10 bucks a cartridge depending on where you get it.

I use the 3M Window Weld Super Fast Urethane #08609. It's only good for something like 6 months from when it's made. The date when the cartridge is packaged is at the end where you screw on the nozzle.[This message has been edited by 68 S-code GT (edited 10-22-2006).]
